Clutches are virtually identical.. Boxes arent.
An ST205 front cut will cost you a fortune and be very hard to find, why not just search for a GenIII SW20 rear cut.
You will end up saving money and have more bits that will be of use to your project.

the other reason was i thought sw20 gen3s had ~180kw and a 205gpA had considerably more, even moreso than the caldina, maybe i was reading false information.. but if theres one thing i know u guys at toymods know ur stuff and are a great helpOriginally Posted by Toobs
current model caldina (last of the 3SGTE's) has 191kw and 324Nm, and thats directly from the current brochure..

wouldnt that have been easier to say in the first placeOriginally Posted by hamgatan
The S54 bolts up to the 3SGTE no problems, they're the same basic block design. The problem with using the S54 is that it was designed for 4A-GE usage originally, it really doesn't have the torque handling capacity to be a long term proposition with a 3SGTE. The gearing is also not particularly suited to the characteristics of the GTE.
Oh and for the original question, the only real advantage I can see in using the St205 engine for an SW20 swap is that it comes with a water to air intercooler. On top of this you'll have some nice 4 spot brakes to sell off to get a bit of money back.
The disadvantages are you'll need to buy:
- SW20 turbo gearbox
- SW20 turbo hubs
- SW20 turbo drive shafts
- SW20 turbo engine mounts
You'll also have to get a hell of a lot more wiring done, modify the water lines so that you have somewhere to fill it from etc.
If you have a pre 94 MR2 it would also be nice to swap in the whole rear cross member and suspension to get the later long control arm setup from a Gen3 half cut.
Both the Gen3 SW20 and ST205 were rated at the same output from the factory, so as you can see the advantages in using the ST205 engine aren't really there.
The GT4 box has shift cables on the other side of the box. I have both gen 3 MR2 engine and a gen 3 MR2 LSD gearbox also hubs, driveshafts, intercooler . I also have a gen 2 turbo engine with chipped ecu and loom. Have a look on my site and e mail me.

as said buy a gen 3 half cut, you get so much more to bennifit from. you will get better brakes that can be used (hubs which was already said that will be needed, for fitting the CV's) you get the CV's you get the box which will be LSD, these alone cost over $1200 (never seen one cheaper then this, and are almost impossible to find) you will have the correct wiring, computer that will fit into your car, the wiring of the 205 are different lengths and positions!
you will save your self thousands in the long run, just make sure you get the half cut, not just a motor and loom!
good luck
~MR2 GT with a big arse turbo + a 3sgte built tonka tuff = lota Fun~
