    Default 17's for ta22

hey all i'm looking at getting my hands on a set of 17's for my ta22 but having a little trouble with getting low offsets. if anyone could tell me roughly what offset i would be looking at and some places where i might be able to find some low offset wheels it would be appreciated...
    cheers

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but as far as I know you can't really buy wheels new these days with the right offsets for old celicas, you usually have to get them custom made from a place like simmons. Your other option is to use spacers which are illegal but I have no problem using them. Generally the wheels with the stud pattern for the old celicas (4 x 114.3) have really high? offsets I think, as they are mainly made to suit cars like the 180sx which shares the same stud pattern. I'm not sure on this one but I think that the TA22s need an offset of around 0 to +20. Dont rely on me for that one though, I'm sure one of the other guys will correct me. Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Matt

Pretty spot on there matt, not much to choose from im afraid. Get on some of the US AE86 forums and check the classifides, there seem to be a number of buggers who can get 16's in various Jap brands and our dollar is strong so atleast you will get dish and 16's fill the guards pretty well anyways.

offset is relative to width to achieve the correct backspace,

what width rim do you want to use?

check a tyre size / rim width chart for tyre sizes if you want
to use a certain spec tyre and it will recommend the rim width
    for that tyre.

phone up a retail tyre shop and ask really nicely if they could
look up the factory ta22 wheel specs for you:

    1 - size x width
    2 - pcd (its 114.3x4)
    3 - offset
    4 - stock tyre (width/profile/inch size)

then you can go from there....

personally id go a matched set of rims all around as oppossed
to a mismatched set of different sizes for front and rears.

id go an inch or 2 bigger in rim size with tyres to match the
original rolling diameter and an inch or 2 increase in width at most.

i would recommend 14 or 15 inch racing / classic style
rims at most by any of these 6, 6.5 or 7 inch width for a
    look of the era.

else 16 or 17 inch rim at most by any of these
widths 6, 6.5 or 7 inch for late model bling if so inclined.

you can keep the factory offset using wider rims,
the increase in rim width is spread evenly over
each side of the rim. this is good for mild width increase,
as it keeps the scrub radius the same which is good for
the light factory steering but it also lessens the backspace
and a little or too much width increase may rub the tyre on
the inside of the wheel well or hit on the strut when putting
    on the wheel.

    or

you can keep the same backspace using wider rims,
this means the increase in width is only on the outside
of the rim. this clears all inside wheel well and strut but
makes steering a bit heavier sometimes. all you need is
outer clearance which can be rolling the wheel arch lips or
cutting and installing flares on the wheel arches at the extreme.

problem is, even 4x114.3 180sx wheels arent THAT easy to come by - not brand new, most wheels wont come in it

I gave up on trying to buy new wheels for my TA22 after I went to the first wheel/tyre shop. I found that the easiest place to find secondhand 4x114.3 wheels is a place like boostcruising.com (mostly wankers there but that doesnt stop me buying shit off them) because there are a lot of 180sx owners over there. Come to think of it, nissan forums would probably be another good starting point. There is a major one I think its nissansilvia.com maybe?

Also, I've had 16s on my car and they do look pretty big on these small cars, 17s would look pretty massive I'd assume, which might be the look your going for. Your going to need a pretty low profile tyre if your running them though. Atm I'm running 15s and they offer a pretty good tradeoff on looks vs driveability. Much nicer to drive and steering is alot better than when on the 16s. Checkout my members ride if you want examples of 16's (chromies that came with the car) and then 15s (5 spoke silver).

Mind you, if you can afford it, I'd take RiceBurna's advice and get some deeeep 16s

Tempe (apologies for the blasphemy ) do a Lenso Concept 5 copy (neat 5-spoke design in silver, chrome or white) that has a number of offset options, including +20 which will fit nicely in 6.5" width. Might need a 3-5mm spacer for a 7" option if strut clearance is too close.

I've also tried a set of 15x7" SSR 3 piece rims in +12 offset that worked well on the '22, but I think any closer to zero offset might be clipping your guards.

    Cheers

I had to get my 17x7's custom made for offset by Centerline in the states. Not cheap but they fit and look awesome. Admittedly i haven't looked into wheels for many many years but by the sounds of things, getting off the shelf wheels to fit hasn't gotten any easier!

17x8 and 17x9 drifteks come in an offset from +15 to +18

4 stud too...they are a bit of a newer style and will only suit some celicas...but they are cheap enough to justify having them blasted and repainted in whatever colour you like

they are around the thousand mark brand new with no tyres
