it isn't the hp that breaks gearboxes... its the torque. Your 3.8 liter has SUBSTANTIALLY more torque then a T50 is likely to hold
Gday guys, my brother and i are about to do a 3.8l v6 conversion into his mazda 808,
i no should of gone the rotor but we have heaps of spare commodore and v6 parts to do it, unsure if the turbo 700 box is goin to fit and would be alot more fun with a manual,
i have a spare t50 siting in the shed and seems they make a bellhousing to fit onto the v6 was thinking of using the t50 but unsure on how much horsepower they can handle? ive always thought they can take up to 200hp and my brother says that the v6 out of a vn only makes approx 135kw im not to sure on that one but to me thats around 180hp?

W5 should have no problems

If should hold up as long as there's no drag style launches, and clutch dumps/pumps.
It will be fine with the V6 as long as its looked after, i have seen T50's behind some powerful engines and they all held up pretty well, Bedford van 253 V8 T50, this van was faster then my mates 1988 Integra and the conversion was about 6 years old and the box was still very smooth, thats a lot of metal to pull around with a lot of torque.
A v6 commodore motor should destroy a t50 even if babied around. Sure it wont happen overnight but everytime you open that throttle and load it up with torque you are chipping away at its lifespan. Having good tyres will also shorten its life.
What about using a vn 5 speed or similar?

Er, are you sure it wasn't a W50? T50's are pretty fragile things, people regularly smash them behind 3T-GTE's and 4A-GZE's, neither of which have mountains of torque.Originally Posted by blacktopspirit

indeed. i broke two behind a 150kw 4agte.Originally Posted by Norbie
Id say if you put a kw figure it would be around 120-130kw atw. (couldnt be bothered converting to hp)
A t50 is resonably strong and will put up with a fair bit of torque if in good nick? I think since they have made a housing for the v6 to suit the box it will put up with it for a while but you would want longer ratios for a V6 than the t50 has got anyway. like mentioned a vn box would suit far better.
i broke 3 behind my 2tg, which made 52rwkw

yes but the way you drive it dose not surprise meOriginally Posted by emp?

Time is priceless yet it costs us nothing. You can do anything you want with it but you can't own it.You can spend it but you can't keep it.And once you've lost it, there is no getting it back, it's just gone."
I understand all this but it comes down to the way you drive, i probably should have mentioned this in my earlier post, i have seen T50's put up with heaps, Old Clubmans, 3T Celica's, 253 Bedford, 2TG TA22 Rally car (5 years on same box), but I myself killed one behind a 4AC powered AE71 estimated slightly more power than a rubberband, so its really up in the air as far as suitability for a V6, maybe just find a V6 box or find a W5*, if the the T50 you have is in good condition just sell it for like $250 or whatever people pay for these things now.
This whole discussion is a bit strange; why do you want a Toyota box behind a Holden engine in a Mazda car? I can't imagine a 5-speed from a Holden V6 is a rare or expensive item; how many V6 Commodores have been sold in the last 20 years?![]()

Save the t50's for the sprinter boys. Besides, with takumi tax these days a far better box can be had for similar cash.
