Depending on the vehicle, it can a difference..

We're not talking crap like gaining 20kw which you will hear thrown around by people who don't know shit lol.. You might pull a few kw, i think on my sportivo i probably made anywhere between 2-5kw at the wheels going on what other sportivos have made..

Oh and the sound too - awesome!!

Although still depends on what sort of car/engine you have

Basically they are all designed to let air into the throttle body more easily than the standard air box.
You only ever get a small increase in power in percentage by say 4-5%(optimistic unless its a truly crap air box) because doing this mod doesnt alter the actual efficiency of the motor or its capacity (like cams or a turbo would).
Also factory airboxes nearly always grab nice clean cold air, unlike most under bonnet pods which suck on the hot air in the engine bay, which could actually negate any performance gain from the increased airflow.
The heat shields you talk about try to avoid some of this problem, but they probally wont help it the filters sucking in hot ait anyway.

summary. unless youve done actually dome something to the rest of engine, i wouldnt bother, itll just increase your chances of getting defected.

the proper way with a pod filter is to install it and have a box made up around it, ducted to the outside of the engine bay so cold air gets in...

if u've got a 3S-GE with TVI-S, prepare for induction noise... it's quite loud, but oh so sweet when the butterflies open up

the best setup with my 4A-G is to have a K&N panel filter, standard air-box, and some ducting to get air from behind the headlight.. the stock intake bits were small and restrictive.. also, the hose between the airbox and throttle body that has the crap emissions thing, i've just removed and made it straight through..
