    Default Diff Qs

Before you ask, yeah I searched but just got more confused

I have a few qeustions about the diff in my car. Car in question is a manual JZX100, axle code B02D.

    What ratio would it be?
It is definately torsen, but it has massive backlash in it. I've read that torsen doesn't have crownwheel or pinion gears or something like that? If so, what could be causing the play in the diff? the tailshaft can be rotated quite far back and forward before the gears meet, it doesn't seem very healthy AT ALL
What is the 'name' off the diff so to speak? ie T18s have a T series, I've also heard of F and G series, what is the Chaser one called?
Finally, if its the gears in the diff that are rooted, are there any gear sets I can replace them with from another car sharing the same diff that have a shorter ratio? It is biased WAY too much to top speed for my liking, theres no way it needs to do 120 in 2nd

    Any help would be appreciated

all RWD toyota diffs run CW+P

your diff is a B series and they are closely related to a G series but i dont think that they can swap over (never tried)

B series diffs are strong as so only constant abuse or neglect will cause them to wear.

not sure on ratio availability but im sure there would be different ratios auto-manual but not sure on specifics.

aftermarket gears would be available but i doubt they would be cheap.

    cheers

    4.55 hey...

    ACCELERATION MONSTER hahaha

So should fit as in try it and let you know, or should fit as in the centres are pretty much identical sizes?

A set of gears from a hiace/hilux shouldn't be bulk expensive, so I spose I could just get some from a wrecker, take it to a diff joint and see if they fit. Might be worth a shot, even if just for the better ratio.

Mate think carefully about ratios because something like a 4.55 may make 1st gear almost useless. It could climb trees but that is not recessarily a good thing.

I've got a JZA70 4.3 in mine ATM. Definitely works. Unsure about the live axle versions though. I've heard they're slightly different. Anyone care to shed some light?

The B series diff in a JZA80 has a 220mm crownwheel, which is significantly larger than an 8" G series, so they won't necessarily be interchangeable.

This is assuming a JZX100 B series is the same as a JZA80 B series; the newer Toyota axle codes appear to be somewhat inconsistent, and no-one is quite sure what they mean. There was another thread on this topic recently and I think the conclusion was "I have no idea".

I'm liking the sound of mumblezzz' 4.3s, I was just having a laugh at the 4.55s LOL

Definately something I'll be looking into in the future

JZX90/100 diffs are definately NOT the same as JZA80 ones, different internals and housings (smaller)
