Default 1JZGE/1JZGTE basic questions (gearboxes etc)

Hi all, i have decided i need to put turbos on a tubo engine, then put that engine in something.

i have had a bit of a look around and havent found much simple info.

first question is, how difficult is it to get a manual 1JZGTE? are they comonly found in manual form overnight from japan?

if they aren't, what gearbox/bellhousing will work? i have heard 1UZFEs are a bit of a pain to attach to manual gearboxes, which is a pity as the engines themselves are pretty cheap.

a mate has a long motor with no turbos etc, so im thinking of running it with aftermarklet ECU straight off with whatever turbos i can find, then see how it goes from there.

    cheers!

What power are you after, my 1jz standard turbos, standard ecu, just bigger exhaust, ( standard dumps ) & intercooler is runing 200rwkw at 10 lbs boost .. reckon i could get close to mid 200 with extra boost ? or run a emanage piggy back .. Basically i reckon its cheap easy bang for your bucks ...

i want at least 300 KW at first, ill see how that goes and decide if i want to spend any money on it, then go big single or something.

i think my post wasnt very clear.

    1. how common are manual 1JZGTES

    2. how hard is it and what do i need to put a manual gearbox on to a 1JZGTE

Manual 1jz i beleive percentage wise is pretty low, but certainly are available .. with the power you want to run the R154 box is the only one i beleive would handle the power, but they have their limitations too .. The R154 box is the standard factory fitement on the 1jzgte's so theres no dramas there .. prices seem to be around $ 2,000 .... Some people run other types of boxes mainly due to the cost of the R154 but generally are inferior

JZZ30 Soarer and JZA70 Supra came from the factory with a 1JZ-GTE and R154, so it's possible to get manual front cuts which makes it nice and easy. They cost a fair bit more than auto cuts due to lower availability but you won't have any problem finding one if you're serious.

i'm kinda serious, but how serious i am depends on how much they are.

if i was really serious i'd just get a 2J and be done with it, but this will be a kind of a power for dollar experiment, i'm even considering *shudder* LS1/2 motors but they seem to have a wooden spoon in a porrige pot for a gearstick.

    got a dyno graph?

mine made 200rwkw (266rwhp) with ebay dumps, a big exhaust and 11psi.

2J gets a little more difficult, they were only avaliable (the turbo motors) with a 6 speed, a shitload more money over an R154 5 speed.

than the NA, 5 speed models came with the W58, which would take less abuse.

IMO R154 is the best bang for buck, as it'll hold a decent amount of power, and still have some hope of fitting into most cars, the sacrifice being notchy shift qualities.

    find a JZA70 manual cut, they're around $4k.

thje autos are $2800 ish, so you can see the contrast between the two

edit: im aware my spelling sucks, its 3:30am.

i always thought the jzz30 soarer never came with a manual option, and all the manuals out there where a conversion? i could be wrong though
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

    Neg, they came factory manual.

Only things that didn't come factory manual are all 1UZ powered cars (such as the UZZ30 Soarer), and JZX81 chasers/etc.

I don't personally see the issue, is this a doubt thing or curiousity ?..

There is a thread about what turbo is best suited to the 1jz. There are a few claims of people getting 300rwkw with a gt30. The r154 is known to hold power and should be able to hold this easily enough (ill confirm that next year. yay!)

Manual cuts are readily avialble generally to any decent importer for around 3700-4200$. SSS Auto in sydney have cuts for 5-6k with big single conversions and stuff sometimes!

A second hand privately bought r154 can be had for 1600-2500$ and sometimes come with a pretty decent clutch...
Motor with accileraies, loom and ecu can be had for anywhere between 800(ebay)1200-1700(importer)

Above is what i have found anyway!

    Cheers,
    Jase

EDIT: Posted quickly cause i needed to pee*

Auto with motor and loom and ecu are generally pretty easy to find and can be had for 2500$. I have never seen one come in a halfcut!

FYI i just picked up a 1jz with ecu and loom for 1500$ from SSS Auto with a 30day warranty from date of installment and running.
I than found a 2nd hand privately bought r154 with a Spankin new OS Gilken Race Twin Plate clutch for 2500$. This was a bargain though and i wouldnt expect to find it again. I spose i was in right place at right time...

So that will give you an idea, if you look hard enough good things can be found!

so whats the process to get a W58 attached to one? did any use it standard? i heard a claim from someone that the W58 was stronger than the R154, but that didnt sound right to me.

its funny that an engine is so much cheaper than a gearbox!

i hate to say it, but all these prices are making the SR20 or RB25 look like a good option in a cheapo silly go fast machine.

To attach a W58 you need a 2JZ->W58 bellhousing from an NA JZA80. Rare as foack, though $400 (ish??) will get you a factory new one from Japan.

And before you decide on an RB25, check the prices on RB25 boxes. They are up there too. Though Z32 box can be made to fit and they are strong and cheaper.
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

rb25 boxes are relatively expensive, but no even close on the r154... And can be had so much easier!

The rb25 would be a cheaper option, and probably produce a much similar product of the 1jz. Maybe not as stable but...

    How tough are rb25's??
Ive kinda always wanted to do an rb25/30. I imagine its a relatively tough motor with the power and the revs...
