    Default 4WD celica LSD

as we know, the turbo version of ST-series celica equipped with E153 gearbox. from the coding, we know it has a 7.1" ring gear, which is same as YR21 tarago's E-series diff. i'm wonder any one has attemp to adapt the Torsen LSD from the 4WD celica into the RWD E series diff?

u mean ST as in ST 165/185/205 yeah?
they never had the E153, that is a 2WD box. found in the MR2 SW20 turbo models, or some V6 manual Camry's.

In my previous post here, I was actually referring to the rear diff assembly in GT4 Celica's - model numbers ST165, ST185 and ST205. While I have not pulled one apart to confirm, the general consensus is that they are E series centres. I have not bothered to confirm or deny the theory as an E series diff in RWD really is a compromise. As to whether the front and centre diffs located within the "gearbox" are usable, I don't know either. I do have several boxes and rear diff assemblies here, and may be tempted to investigate, but the impetus is lacking at the moment.

I have measured the short shaft and "Torsen" from said 185 Celica. The diameter of the spline, and spline count, are the same as the "LATE" "T" series, as found in AE86's.

    cheers Chuck.

i've heard that rumour for up to the 215's also, which had the torsen..
but never had it confirmed as fitting...

aren't some tarago axles supposed to fit into some T series diffs? i forget which thread that was...

*will finish later and correct if anyones got other info*

Late T series rear axle splines:

    Car models:
ae86 kouki models (ie late only) via parts or car import,
ae95 4wd wagons (not tercel 4wd) local Aus
    maybe others?

    Splines:
    25.3mm spline shaft diameter
    x amount of teeth
    y tooth shape profile

    All E series splines:

    Car models:
    x
    x
    x
    x

    Splines:
    25.3mm spline shaft diameter
    x amount of teeth
    z tooth shape profile

so E series has the same spline diameter, teeth count but
NOT the same tooth shape profile as Late T series and is not interchangable unless you file it which is not a good solution but can be made to "fit".

    T series Torsen:

    Models:
    4wd gt4 celica rear(some?)
    Toyota Rav4 (front/rear?)

    Splines:
    25.3mm spline shaft diameter
    x amount of teeth
    tooth shape profile??

25.8 ish mm, and 24 splines. (dodgy vernier calipers)

Far from a strong diff. I have destroyed in both AWD and RWD config....admittedly in RWD it did have a TTUZ in front of it but didn't take much to go bang.

In both instances it was the torsen housing that let go though, not the ring/pinion gears

I know you can puy the LSD out of the mr2 box into the GT4 g/box giving you a front LSD. There is a little bit of machining to be done though. The Toyota guru over here did this in his 185 rally car.

Not that it helps you to much though

I can confirm the rear GT4 diff is not E code. its bascially a T code but the splines are as per late AE86/AE95. The 2.9 gear set is useless apart from 4WD. The hemisphere is typically floggged out from gear movement.
I fail to see how the MR2 type factory LSD can be fitted into a GT4 box.. I'll double check, but I'd say it was almost impossible due to the internal construction of the GT4 diff which hss to drive the transfer case . The torsen sentre is a sealed unit.
I've got heaps of all this stuff apart at work all the time, so generally happy to answer queries
