I have a AE92 5 speed and was told it was an LSD unit but with both drive shafts in and turning input shaft in gear only 1 driveshaft turns. Can you tell by serial number which unit it is and is it a mechanical type LSD or a viscous type?

Sounds like it doesn't have one... If you really want to be sure, pull a driveshaft out and have a look.
Jack it up and spin the wheels, if one turns one way and other the other way, its a single wheeler, if they both spin the same way its an LSD.

no ae92 had a stock LSD.
so it will either be an ae101 GTZ gearbox (helical type lsd)
or a c56 from a superstrut levin/trueno.
IF it has an LSD.
it prob wont be an aftermarket LSD as they are all (except the TRD and quaife helicals) clutch pack diffs and are quite aggressive.
the helical diff will act like an open diff unless it has resistance on both wheels
you didnt say if its a supercharger or n/a?

Thanks Rev. The box has come as an extra with the supercharged AE82 I bought with just the std AE82 box in at the moment. The guy I bought the car off was told it was LSD and has thicker driveshafts. If it is a helical type then i guess the only way to be sure without putting it in the car first is to pull it apart on the bench.
so your s/c has the stock ae82 gearbox?
id keep that if you could
the ratios are a lot better. the s/c boxes have much wider ratios.
also you will need to muck around with axles to fit it.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but as I'd also like advice on whether my gearbox has an LSD it seems appropriate to continue this thread.
I've recently purchased a manual '84 AW11 MR2. Now I understand that no '84 mr2 was fitted with an LSD as standard. I was using the car at an autocross yesterday and discovered something very interesting. When starting off with a clutch dump, it'd leave 2 equal stripes on the ground, but if the rear end is jacked up and one wheel turned by hand, the other one doesn't turn - not turns in the other direction, but doesn't turn at all. Same thing happens if only 1 rear wheel is lifted off the ground. Any ideas?
Cheers

try one wheel on grass one on seal
its possible its had a helical diff fitted, or a later c56 box
try jacking it up and putting it in gear.
not at all uncommon for an mr2 to spin both real wheels, good traction in them![]()
