Tein HR coilovers, Sorting out my Hard ride... MZ20

Ey all,

I installed a set of Tein HR coilovers recently in my MZ20, but I have found that they are too stiff for me. The car seems to go round corners much better, and looks much better being low, but it seems a bit stiff for a daily as I’ve kind of toned down my driving these days...

The stock Tein springs I have are ment to be 12kg/mm front and 6kg/mm rear... What does anyone else with these spring rates think? Are yours very hard? Also what is the stock spring rate for an MZ20?

Could I just buy other, softer springs, while retaining the 'lowness' and adjustability? or will I have to change the struts as well?

I don’t want to sell the HR's as I like the height adjustable feature, but I want a softer ride…

Any info/advice would be great...

medium are 9.7/4.3
about $300 per set.. both are -45mm fron theight, -30mm rear height

bear in mind, japanese soft might not be aussie soft...

I have no idea what the spring rates relate to in regard to ride comfort, if you know what I mean...

Do you think the mediums would be a good compromise?

Will the springs listed above fit streight into my setup, or will I have to change the helper spring too?

have hr's on my ga70 ride was choppy i have to say so i went firmer put the 12kg springs off the front on the back to replace the 6kg and put new pair of 18kg on the front and the odd thing was it made the ride much better

I would have thought they are adjustable for damping to? Have you tried just setting them to as soft as they will go?

Might be worth paying a GOOD suspension joint to have a look at the set-up and make sure everything is equal front-rear and side-side.

hr's are not adjustable on the shocks for any form of damping only height

what do you mean "choppy"?

is this for road or track? smooth roads?
18kg is much firmer than pretty much any of the jap springs (for road use) and they are considered hard....

considering orignal poster is saying 12/6 is too hard... 18/12 will not make things any better?

not sure on the total length of the HR etc..

but S-tech springs are designed to go on stock strut, so i guess they won't fit a "coil-over" setup.
however, you should be able to get same diameter coil springs made or over counter from many places...

best bet is to find other cars with different spring rates you can have a ride in, or borrow springs if possible...

failing that, coil-over springs are not expensive, so you could try a few sets

Softer spring rates. say 9/5

That said check your bump (compression) travel. It maybe possible that you are riding on the bump stops if you have lowered the car down. That will make the springs seem very hard.

Jack up the car and support the body on stands then remove wheel and jack up strut until the car begins to rise, this is your ride height and gives you a look at how much room is left to the bump stops.

If there is very little, say less than 25mm then try the car ride hieght with around 50mm bump travel.

HA's are damper and height adjustable.

HR's are just height.

i had HR's with 12 front and back, ride was good, cant say it was very stiff at all, hella-body-roll though

when i say choppy it used to bounce all over the shop but when i went firmer it stoped this and provided a much better ride quality as for uk roads they are full of holes lmao

so your shocks were too hard? or hitting (previously mentioned) bumpstops?

yep proabaly i do have it dropped to the bottom of the shocks on height so yep lmao

its mainly the damper settings that cause an overly harsh ride
when i had my ha dampers rock hard, the car was undrivable.
it litterally was unbelievable.

springs will make a difference, but damper will make the most differnece to your problem
and with hr's
your stuck
