I suppose the only other benefit the ST215 engine may have is age and therefore possibly condition.
I have the opportunity to purchase either a st205 or st215 caldina motor. I'v done some searching and the only real differences i have found is the caldina has a different WTA cooler and intake manifold. Are these the only differences.
Just trying to weigh up if the extra cost for the caldina motor is worth it.

Personally i would go the ST215 cos if there is a difference it most likely be in favor of the newer motor. better oil pump design, different injectors can all be things that might have changed from the older motor.

St215 has integrated exhaust manfiold/turbine housing.... no biggy iof you are changing it anyway..
caldina has air to air top mount interwarmer.. not WTA
caldina is newer and MUCH less likely to have been thrashed

What car is this going into? Because st215 engine/ecu's are alot more difficult to fit into GT4's..
The turbo and manifold are a one peice unit.

Hi, Im enthused about corollas..
im fairly sure theres quite a difference... compression, pistons etc
the st215 being VERY suseptible to dying from detonation.
the st205 doesnt seem to have as many issues with that.
is the 215 is auto, forget trying to run the stock ecu

This is going to be a replacment motor for my mr2. Might be best just to stick with the 205 motor. As people have said, only reason the 215 motor interested me is cos it's newer.

so you want to run it on the stock sw20 ecu?
go 205
im trying to remember the 215 compression, is like 9.5/9.8:1

Nah, i'v got a microtech to run the motor.

heres a thread that may highligt some differences and things you may need to modify if you do go for the st215 engine

I've only had a couple of these to repair so far, but there are lots of small differences with pipework for heaters etc. the steel and alloy sump pans are both different to what you need for a MR2. if its the version with crank angle sensor and no dissy, then the front plastic cases and oil pump are different (like late camry 5SF, but not the same). In any case, the 205 engine will not be a simple fit to your MR2. again, there are piles of small differences and none of the early gen MR2 stuff can be swapped onto it. the harness is totally different and can be grafted into a MR2 without heaps of work
Wiring doesn't worry me, i'll make a new loom with the microtech. I'm thinking i'll stick with the 205 motor, cos i don't know if i'll have to send the ecu back to microtech to have a remap for the 215 engine. Seeing as it has a crank angle sencer and no dissy.

the 215 motor has coils on plugs and runs the same oil pump and cam and crank shaft sensors as the altezza 3sge also runs a beams head with out vvti
is there a difference in terms of engine harness ? Am looking for an alternative/uncut engine harness for my ST215. Thanks.
Get the Caldina motor.
Better intake manifold (Side entry means no lean Cyl-No.3)
Coil on plug ignition (no crappy distributer, this is 2012 people, not 1975)
The head is otherwise the same as the ST205 (the BEAMS motors uses different head castings and a narrower included valve angle, I think it's 35-degress? vs the old 45-degrees? but don't quote me on the angles)
makes more power from factory (just)
**Has top feed fuel injectors** (seriously this is reason enough alone)
May be younger (production 1997-2001 Manuals, 1997-2004 autos. ST205/MR2 was 1994-1999)
Has the turbofold, which has made 190AWkW which isn't bad. (Get the post 2000 Caldina motor if you plan on keeping the turbofold as there are reports of the exhaust manifold cracking where it mounts to the head on series 1 engines)
My pick given that you're running a microleb and need the gearbox is an AUTO is a post 2004, ST215 Caldina 3SGTE. Or if not at least post 2000. After 65000kms of thrashing mine it's still smiling back
Jordan
P.S:
In any case, do your due diligence:
Compression check (if possible)
Leak down test
Check the oil (milky means walk away
Check that it spins (wrench on crank nut)
get a warranty or at least some agreement that if it's a dud you get your money back/another engine
If you can take the spark plugs out have a look at them and down the bores .
General condition (is it covered in salt/dirt/oil, is there external damage from a crash?)
