How to rotate the exhaust housing on a TD04L turbo

I've pulled my turbo apart as I need to rotate the exhaust housing and here is how I did/will do it.

1. Remove wastegate actuator. If you can't do this without pictures then please don't attempt any of the following as you obviously dont have mechanical skills and will probably stuff your turbo.

2. Undo centre clamp


3. Remove centre clamp


4. Ease the housing off by gently pulling with your hand. There is a locating pin on the TD04L turbos so you cant just spin the housing off.

5. Once apart grind off the locating pin or remove with vice grips so that you can rotate the exhaust housing.


6. Reassemble exhaust housing back on in reverse of how it came off and position to the desired location.


7. Put the centre clamp back on and tighten up

8. Now the wastegate actuator WONT fit back on to the mounting bolts as you will have rotated the exhaust housing. You will need to make up a new way of mounting the actuator. In my case as I only need to rotate the exhaust housing 90 degrees I can make an extension mount plate from the original mount holes and bolt the wastegate actuator to this.

My VF23 turbo was the same except it didnt have the locating pin.

I would also say that a large number of other turbos are the same,

The front housing can also be rotated on most turbos by undoing the numerous bolts on the back of the compressor housing, turning it, then re-tightening. Job done

ZOMG, on used turbos I've never had the joy of being able to get the housing off by "gently pulling with my hand"...hehe in fact it has been a lot harder than that!

well it took a little bit of effort and rocking back and forth to get the housing off but I didn't want people to take to it with a hammer so thats why I said that
