hm.. to each his own.. and yeh there are some variants of the XA61 that don't have power steering, very very early models though, and if not mistaken use parts from RA-6X or so.. was told it was when they just started to seperate the two, hence some "oddities" in between? even if it was true, it would've been purely JDM and by now would be long at the bottom of the landfill..
Yes JDM only... & yes now landfill...
RA60/5 parts will not fit without big mod's..
but on that, i can get tierod's made to fit the RA's rack, but have to mod cross member, & need shaft from rack to colum mod..
this also may need engineers report...

    According to this

That N is just the trim level of the car.
    N - Mid level (general)
Doesn't necessarily mean it has manual assisted rack.

Nathan, what character is there on yours?

Have you gone to Toyota and checked the price/availability of the rack?
Does the EPC show us pictures by any chance? (I'm not near mine)

    Would def require engineers report.
Wouldn't be a cheap one either.

Measurements of bumpsteer, ackerman angle, etc...

Would be a bastard to pass.
Finding a factory one would be mucho easier.

Power assist doesn't kick in until you turn the wheel.
As a test remove the PS belt and go for a drive.
It will tell you if the problem is the power steering, or just a feature of the car (or possibly bad alignment/bushes)
    My shoulder my pain..
It's not the car.... it's power steering ..
    RA40/60 manual steer & 5 speed = no pain..
Charger manual steer & 3 speed = no pain..
MA61 auto with power = pain..

That's a damn good question. If my car still had a build plate I'd tell you.

"N" = lowest model. '81-'82 only. gaurd mounted mirrors Manual steering was only optional on this model..
"S" = mid. '81-'85. eg. stick hand out of window to move wing mirror
"G" = good stuff. '81-'85. eg. power wing mirrors
    "GT" = race. '81-'85.
I've got numbers from the EPC, rang Toyota, Nil stock..

    Just FYI
Nathans was the most povospec I've seen.
No aircon, shitty celica seats, guard mounted mirrors, 1G-EU, no LSD, T-series diff, vinyl sunvisors, vinyl ceiling?, L-type.
    I'm sure there was more.

But it still had power steering

how different are ra60 racks compaired to ma61 racks? if you ran every thing from rack back to steering wheel would it be possible?
xA61's chassis, is longer from firewall to rack.. so no go..
mounting points on the crossmember are different..
track is wider on the xA61's than the RA60/5's..

Speak to Ed, he did it to my 84 model MA61. Its heavy at low speed but once it increases the steering is very direct & light enough. If you lose it big time though just let go or you'll pop your shoulder out
    If in doubt power out

I ran my MA61 for over a year with the P/S pump disconnected and the lines looped. It was heavy going but still driveable, although back then I had stock suspension and tyres. With my current setup I can barely move the wheel at all when the engine isn't running.
