Default My 1JZ problem list - e.g touch ignitor wiring plug & car stalls

Hi, I'm having problems with my 1JZ.

    • If I touch the wires going to the ignitor while the car is running, it stalls.
    • When the car is idling, when I blip the throttle the revs drop lower than idle then come back up
    • The engine runs fine off boost, but backfires heaps when I back off (coasting, downhill etc)
    • When boosting it sometimes cuts (like hitting boost cut) and the CEL comes on briefly
    • Sometimes needs a bit of throttle when I crank it over for the engine to start. (not often though)
    • Has a pretty strong fuel vapour.

Can anybody give me some suggestions on what could be causing this? I have high suspicions of it being either ignitor, coilpack or map sensor related. The coilpacks had cracks in them so I glued and taped them up.
There's definitely something up with the ignitor or wiring to it, or is it normal behaviour for the car to stall if the plugs are touched?

Could any of this be timing related?

Can bosch coils be run with the standard ignitor? I plan on getting coils eventually when I go Microtech for my single conversion but if it's possible I'll change them over now.

    Cheers

If the plug to the ignitor is so flaky that it stalls when you touch it then you are almost definately going to have issues driving the thing around.

Fix that wiring first and see what problems remain?

My CAS plug wiring was flaky for a while, resulted in similar problems. Since rewiring that plug its been a LOT smooother.

When you mean touching the plugs, do you mean just touching them, or wiggling them or?

I doubt it is the map sensor if you are touching the igniter plugs...and I don't think it would be the coils.

I'd be checking the plugs first!

Also yes there is no reason that you can't use bosch coils or other on the stock igniter.

    Pressing gently on the plug.

How should I rewire the plug? I'll have to have another look at it, I did look at it a while ago and cleaned it all up etc with electrical spray but it obviously hasnt fixed it.

I cant remember if the 1J ignitor gets it's ground through the loom or from it's attachment to the body. If it does get it's electrical ground through the mount to the body, is it securely mounted?

Hmm, I've always thought it is grounded through one of the wires it uses those rubber mounts with the spacer and bolt. But maybe I should ground it properly just incase.

This is how I've mounted it it's on the right of the pic, I cut off part of the mount and straightened so I could wedge it under the guard lip, the other end is just bolted in with a rubber mount like it normally would be but without a spacer. Actually it should be grounded through the bolt anyway?

Just had a look at the 1J diagram for the ignitor and it looks like pin 4 on the "L" plug (small one) is the ground wire.

I'd be checking the other ground points in the bay, especially the brown wire groups that bolt to the outside of the intake manifold. Make sure they're bolted down nice and tight.

From what I have, I thought it was those six not listed as signal wires, but looking at that diagram the one with the power seems like a good go (that's what I get for never looking into it)

*shrugs* maybe I'm wrong... but hope that helps.

Things I normally run through.. Are the plugs/coils damaged? (those brittle things drive me nuts) O2 sensor? Map?
If you think it's timing related run the crank to 0 TDC and see how the cam gears are lined up. (at least for the mechanical side....)

But as to idle and coming off boost obviously your throttle is closing... there's always the ISCV how does it look?

Maybe I'm just being naive here...

Plugs and coils seem ok (they all fire properly). O2 sensor I havn't checked, MAP sensor I've checked the voltage at idle and everything seems ok.
    Timing I havn't checked, it's something I havn't had any experience with.

And I havnt checked the ISCV either, will do that on the weekend.

I might try to organise with someone else with a 1JZ to swap the common parts and see if any of those fix the problem.

For your idle/stall/start/backfire problems, adjust your TPS to read IDL
