Red face 3sgte turbo upgrade? Need help!

    HI,
i've got a ST165 3S-GTE motor in my celica and want to upgrade the turbo,
but i'am boxed in a corner.
I don't know what would be a good turbo to put on my car , that isn't heaps expensive,
any idea's would be much appreciated.

    Thanks guyz&gurlz.

Easy upgrades - Twin-entry CT26 (ST185) would be a big improvement... Or, CT20B (ST205) would be even better!

Harder upgrades - GT28RS for some extra power with response... Or, GT3076R for really good power!

Definitly forwards IMO from the Single-entry CT26 that you'd have on there now...

But, you'll have to get a CT-T3 flange for your manifold (or go custom) and make up a new dump pipe to suit the KKR...

what do you classify as heaps expensive? always remember you get what you pay for.

    how much power?

    what sort of budget?

    cheers

is that to get the whole job done? ie making it fit + dump + oil/water lines + intake and cooler pipes modded?
if so i wouldnt have a clue as to how you will get it all done that cheap. the parts alone will be more like $1500 and thats using the cheapest of the cheap.

let us know how you go with it anyway.

    cheers

after all the BS ive been thru with many different types of HI-FLOWS i seriously wouldnt bother anymore.

easier to just buy a turbo designed for the job and be done with it.

    cheers

overboosting, stupid amounts of lag and a generally disapionting power output.

if you want to go for a t25/t3 style turbo i should have the adapters back next week to allow them to bolt onto the original manifold, but a custom dump + inlet pipe and oil lines will be needed.

for the price of the KKR turbos you cant really go wrong and ive heard some fairly decent reports on them.

if you have a bit more cash i would probly go for a garrett gt2871 but thats just my opinion.

im still trying to sort out problems with an mr2 that the customer had a hiflow done on and by the time all this stuff is sorted out it would have been cheap[er to get the right parts from the start.

    cheers

    Hi...,
I am wondering about your statement because I am planning for this mod too. if I use the GT3076R Turbo, do I need to upgrade my engine ? Or is it safe with the stock engine without doing any other mods ??

    Kindly advice. Thanks.

a mate of mine is running a GT28R - on 15psi, makes some decent hp although the figure eludes me at the moment.. on a built Gen II, it's not really working the forgies and rods lol..

yeh it has a custom manifold, plenum cap, motec, etc etc.. but really i think this is an awsome package for the street.. it makes boost at 1800rpm, full boost under 3k, but honestly it's the most torquey thing i have driven.. very streetable and reliable.. apparantly they don't come on song till about 18-19psi.. but the stock injectors are getting a bit far out..

you can get brand new GT28R's from about $900... RRP is about $1050 or so..

fabrication work (plenum, piping, cooler, sheet ally, dump pipe, exh etc etc etc) all done by Extreme Custom Engineering (brisbane)

just thought i'd add some comments from my own experience.

to fit the twin entry ct26 you need the manifold to go with it for obvious reasons.

the later twinentry manifold sits the turbo at a different angle and closer to the block. i found it wouldnt fit with the stock st165 oil cooler in place and had to remove it and block of the lower hole. and use an oilfilter relocator to replace the water bypass thingo between the oil filter and block.

as the st165 has a single entry design on the manifold i think you can fit the supra ct26 straight on for a mild upgrade. pretty sure they have a bigger exhuast housing and bigger comp wheel.

i have a hiflowed ct26 on my sw20. has a 50mm trim TO4E comp wheel. starts spooling around 3300 depending on load but will make 14psi by 4000rpm. whilst i had the stock cams power would drop of after 6000rpm compared to 5500rpm when i had the stock ct26.

now with the NA cams i find it continues to make good power to 6600rpm. thats only thru my buttinseatdyno tho, so no actual proof to back that up yet.

obvious benefits of hiflow is it bolts on and no need to modify anything. dont know what probs roadrunner has encountered and why, but i've had no probs whatsoever.

so long as you dont go crazy with the comp wheel shouldnt be too laggy, but would def get a KKR if you can afford it etc.
