no, not legal,
the exaust outlet has to extend past the furthest door. t18 being a hatch makes it a three door. so you'll have have a rear exit exaust
Gday, just had me 2tg t18 tunned and time for exhaust change, currently running extractors, 2inch system into 4inch cannon.
Bout to get new exhaust this week, and exhaust place wasnt too sure if side pipes on a t18 are legal, i didnt want 2 take there word as they could be just sayin that 2 get me to go there,
otherwise was just thinking 2inch from extractors into sports box and mandrel bent over diff with chevy dump pipe out the back wheel.

This for any state? You got any documentation to back it?
Just interested because if you are right then I can legally run one on my car. I just thought they were illegal so didn't even bother finding out.
Legal if the rear 1/4 windows don't open, The exhaust must exit behind the last openable door or window.

I don't think they count the hatch as a door on this. However ring your local roads authority and find out from the horses mouth.
But whatever the legality of the placement, I'd guess that the system you describe above will be illegally loud.

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
The exhaust must be a certain distance behind any opening door/window/hatch/whatever to eliminate any possibility of exhaust gas getting into the cabin. This means side pipes are a no go for pretty much anything except a ute. This is the case in NSW and Qld, I doubt it would be different anywhere else.

Not that i know for definate either way but this is the NCOP ruling states:
"The outlet of an exhaust must be rearwards of any passenger side entry door or opening window."
This would seem to indicate wat Lambolica was saying that the Hatch doesnt count as a 'passenger side entry door'
Sweet that means the RA28 might be able to have dual side pipes![]()

Hi guys,
as some one who has a recently engineered side pipe on his car i may be able to offer some assistance.
THIS APPLIES TO NSW ONLY - other states will have to check your rules
Norbie - those rules recently changed here, as Simon said it is now only "exiting behind the last PASSENGER door or opening window", there used to be a distance requirement, which has been removed. As the hatch is not used for pasenger entry (normally lol) this does not count.
after mine was engineered, it has to be blue slipped too. the Blue slip guy had to eat humble pie after staring in disbelief at the pipe and saying "you must be kidding" i explained the changes to him, he told me i was wrong and went to prove it, only to find the rules had changed.
Anyway - this allows you to have side pipes out either side on a pre 88 vehicle (im not 100% on the year model of this regulation) and out the drivers side on any age vehicle, as long as the system complies with the other regulations like noise, ground clearance etc.

I asked about side pipes on my MA61 when I got it engineered a few years back and was told "no way". Good to hear the rules have changed, I'd quite like a dirty great side pipe for strafing pedestrians with over-run flames.![]()

well i rang service tasmania today, who put me through to someone who thought they could answer my question, after spending about 15minutes on the phone and geting no where, i asked can you answer my question or not?
still didnt get no where after talking to another bloke and after about 25minutes on the phone i decided it was time to say get fu*ked u stupid c*nts and hung up..
anyway am going another style with the exhaust now, going 2 inch stainless steel from the extractors into stainless steel sports box before the diff, then mandrel bent over the diff with a chevy dump pipe style out the back wheel.
all this for $550.... i thought it was ok for full stainless steel and mandrel bent system.

Hey mate,
Just thought id let you know you a mate of mine got pulled over for a side pipe and he got defected cause it was on a four door and u could open the rear door and have exhaust in ur face lol.. But we asked about them and the (tassie) cop said its fine if its past the last door so you should be fine on a T-18 if u change ur mind back...
Cheers Craig...
