They run the same buckets as 7m's and 4a's from what the EPC says.

If you get one with huge clearance (say 30 thou), pull the lifter and look at the area where the valve stem sits.

Sometimes the end of the valve stem leaves a deep impression in the bottom of the lifter bucket. Replacement of the bucket returns the clearance to spec.

If the bucket has failed, then sticking a shim in would be a band-aid repair...

    Edit:
Given the description of the wear on the shim in the post below, nevermind. The problem is not likely the one I have described here.

its for my car actually. cheers ez for making the thread,

ive had a few replaced a couple years back but the noise has come back and i still have one of the old shims, by the looks of it before it has worn a slight dish into one of the sides and this was what was apparntly making them noisey as hell...

so should i bother asking toyota if they have them in stock?

A decent size dealer should have shims in stock.

Depends if you need a new shim, or if you mind getting a used one.

I have seen two first gen 3sgte do that.
It will likely have worn the tip of the cam lobe. The two that I worked on, the customers opted to do the shim only.
The way the cam lobe was worn, I kind of expected it to come back, but they both made at least two years.

Do not wait too long though. I saw one head sitting in the corner of a machine shop, the damage to the shim had progressed to the point where it spit the shim out.

If you don't mind posting a picture of the old shim, I would appreciate it. I am kicking myself for not taking pictures.

depends how many times you have done it before.
ive done mine about 7 times (long story) and im getting pretty good at it. still a pita job though. to do a full set your best off removing the cams, which means having to retime the motor etc etc when your done. if you dont, after doing a few the hard way you will be kicking yourself, plus you cant check the underside of the bucket leaving the cams in place. id budget a good days work for a first timer, if many need changing. but before you order shims you have the measure clearance, measure shim, work out shim you need, swap what shims you can around, then order what you need. dont mix the buckets up, if you do you will have to remeasure all your clearances. be careful when tightening them cam caps too, do them with an accurate torque wrench, they have this ability to strip threads at really irritating times....
so why do they wear like that? they are meant to rotate in the bucket....
and spitting shims is no biggie, ive done it before lol

last time i heard your 'rolla (queen mary falls cruise) it sounded like all the shims were split... sure do hope it's better then that now...

on another side note... what's the most likely cause of noise from the top end if an engine has been left sitting for ages... i remembre hearing a noise the last time i started my 1G (over a year ago) sounded not unlike timing chain noise...
