    Default AW11 thermofan relay?

    Hey all,

My mate has an AW11 which he got from these forums. It has been overheating so i made him stop driving it, when he got it to the mechanic he said that the relay that controls the thermofans is dead, and that there are none of this relay in Australia. Are they that hard to come by?

Also is there any other relay that we could use instead? I thought it would be a pretty simple relay but maybe im wrong.

    Any help would be appreciated!!

    Thanks

    Ben

That's a bit wierd. If you unplug the control relay for the thermo's in an AW11 the fans should run any time the ignition is on.

Also the cooling system on an AW11 is so heavily over engineered that I would be extremely surprised if the thermo's not running caused it too many over heating issues. I run a stock cooling system that has an extra radiator in front of the stock one, for my water to air, blocking flow and it never overheats with a 290RWKW 3S in it.

maybe the mechanic is full of c#*p...

It starts overheating after about 10-15mins of driving. I haven't really had a look at it yet so i don't know exactly what it's doing. All i know is it drives fine still, it just idles really weird. Once it warms up the idle sits really high (2000rpm) then drops right down then straight back up etc and keeps repeating this cycle.

Welcome to the world of BHG I reckon.

If it overheats while on the move it certainly isn't the fans causing this, they only really help when still or in traffic. The high idel is caused by the dodgy wax pill idle control being stuffed. The cycling is caused by air in the cooling system going past the temp sensor and showing a colder temp tehn cycling back to hot.

It might just be that he has a heap of air in the cooling system, but I wouldn't be surprised if that air came from the combustion chambre.

hmmmm i dont wanna pass that kinda news on... I helped him pick the car

So maybe try to bleed the cooling system? And does that mean it needs a new idle control as well?

    Otherwise its BHG time

Yeah a thorough bleed of the cooling system, prefferably with the rear of the car up in the air.

4A idle control is rubbish, most people just cover the idel air bypass hole with gasket paper.
