drumming up business me thinks? he may ahve adjusted the pushrod so you come back and he can tell you you need to replace this this and this, and his not so busy week just got a little bit more busy....
just a conspiracy theory, dont mind me....
What makes him think the brake booster is on the way out ? if it is faulty, it wont make the pedal lower, it will just be a lot harder to press the brakes, & actually the pedal height will be higher .....

Get a second oppinion (from someone who is honest)
From your first post I would be looking at the pedal adjustment like others have said.
Sounds like the booster push rod need to be adjusted. Small gap between push rod and master cylinder equate to big pedal free play. I had that problem when I fitted a new brake master cylinder in my car.
take it to another mechanic, any mechanic that lets brakes go out the door worse then they were when they drove in should be shot!
you should have aproximatley 1/3 (MAXIMUM) pedal free play, and shouldnt be able to push the pedal any further than 2/3 the way to the floor,
id say hes done a shit flush and bleed!.....
booster excuse sounds like shit too!
(btw im a mech)

well he re-bled the brakes and there was no difference. When i get the car back i'm gonna check the pedal hight and the push rod clearance. and ill post up if it makes a difference.
