If you ever plan on putting that thing around corners, I would stay well away from the 9"
If all you are going to do is drag it, then put one in.
Hi guys. I know im going to cop shit for this so ill just do it anyway
I have searched left right and centre for a ratio for a G or F series to put in my ma61 as the 3.9 is just too short. I am after a 3.0-3.2 this is what old falcon's with windsor v8's and 5 speeds came out with and which i think would suit the car best.
I was speaking to an engineer on the phone the other day and he said that i would actually be able to have a solid rear end engineered into the irs vehicle providing it is done properly (ladder bar/ 4 link etc). He mentioned the torque loss caused by IRS and agreed the Solid is the way to go for straight line speed.
I had a hilux diff here that i could put in it, but sadly there isnt a tall enough ratio unless someone knows of someone who does a/m gearsets cheap???. Which leaves me back to the original idea to put a ford 9" in it. Another sort of IRS would be Really difficult to adapt i would think...Please let me know if there is any other easy option??
Does anyone know the easiest way i could go about doing this? Would i be able to attach the ma61 springs and shocks/ suspension to it and fit it that way? The MS112 i have has quite an interesting 5 link diff setup, does anyone believe that might be beneficial to copy??? I looked at ladder bar, but essentially thats designed for straight line dragsters...
Thanks - Blake

Cost of engineering a live axle into your MA61?
Cost of custom gears made by Ivan Albins Off Road?
Compare these two prices and you have your answer.
I do plan on taking it around corners yes lol. But i also have some plans in the back of my head for NOS or a blower down the track so it needs to be strong (g series or 9")
im sure i could make it work to handle, i mean people are now making kits to convert BA and VY falcadores back to solid to go faster...figuring out how is the hard part.
Get a diff from a MkIV TT 6-speed, they're 3.2:1 and incredibly strong. There are full-weight MkIV's in the US running 8's with the stock diff so they can obviously cop a hiding. You'll need custom drive shafts but I can't see that costing any more than bastardising the car with a solid axle.
Also I fail to see how IRS results in torque loss compared to a solid axle. Any torque loss will be in the diff centre itself, which is exactly the same whether it's mounted in a solid axle housing or bolted to the floorpan.
Are you really sure you need a diff ratio quite that high though? The Falcons have them in an attempt to improve fuel economy, not to make the car perform any better. Do you really need a 300 km/h top speed?

Norbie, with regards to the mk4 diff, i would need to bolt the whole rear end out of one in would i not? i imagine it would be quite difficult fitting a centre which is 1/2 as wide again into the stock cradle...
Another idea i spose is getting a jag irs complete setup, but then they are a PITA with inboard disc setup, unless custom d/s's could be made...they are cheap and tough as nails also...does anyone know if the whole cage would fit under an ma61? Cool1 - you've played with them - what do u recon?
so, is this running, engineered, and on the street now? whats the latest? dyno?
cheers

Nope, just get the housing and mount it to the MA61 cradle - obviously some modification/fabrication would be required but it's quite straightforward. Then as mentioned get some shafts made to connect it to your hubs and away you go.Originally Posted by Robbos_Toyotas

indeed it is with no hassles.Originally Posted by ed_jza80
Norbie i have an ma70 torsen lsd here so i might do what dave suggested and get a custom set of gears made up. i have a ma70 complete rear end i can tax the driveshafts out of to make the custom ones up out of...
im sure with some bracketry and imagination it can be done also.
and....???

i havent dyno'd it yet, as the motor is still too new imo. I also have to install my msd amplified ignition amoungst sort out a few other things.
The diff is my main issue for the moment, the reason i am not taking it to dubbo in fact. You can imagine the amount of fuel a 650 double pumper would be throwing into a hot v8 at 3000rpm over 900km....not cheap.
So after all that time and effort building a car, you're not going to drive it because it uses a bit of fuel?

tow it down to Dubbo then? that's the purpose (towing) of buying the MS112?
im poor now man, i moved out of mum and dads...lol...and i earn average wages..Originally Posted by Norbie

Fix the dizzy flex issues and drive it to dubbo.
Don't be soft.
