Had a few good drives in this today after doing an auto flush and diff oil change and making this pod shield(more of a cover really)->

It goes really well but peaks out at 1.2 bar on std wastegate spring. Not ideal. I have to get a wideband on it on monday and see what the AFR's are. If they are happy then off it goes, if not we will have to consider options.

Add more fuel with 2J 440's and fiddle the ecu with an SAFC or close up internal gate and fit an external gate to drop boost lower. Didn't really want to do either but shit happens.
The wastegate valve is very small so I am not really surprised it runs way over the advertised boost pressure of 10 psi.

Still runs really nicely though. Such a sweet engine. 1J's seem to have a different character to a 2J, can't put my finger on it but they are just different

Sorry, no pics of oil drain, forgot all about it.

    Exactly , its a bit like a 1G , all small displacment 6,s run real nice .
Its the small stroke that does it on a 1 j

I am considering opening up the wastegate port in the housing and fitting a larger flap to try and get this boost down a few psi. Will only cost a bit of time and if it works all good, if not we think of the other options.

eBay external wastegate will fix all problems, you've got a spot to bolt it up so why not?

The spot to bolt it on needs to be heavily modified as it is in completely the wrong place on this manifold.
Opening up the WG will only take a few hours work and no outlay whereas fitting an external gate will cost quite a bit in parts and considerably more labour. If they can both achieve the same thing then the first option is obviously the better one.
I will post results and then other guys will know what is needed if they are considering this option. I'm keen to get stuck in and see if it will work but my wife will slaughter me if I go out to the shed today.

Pulled the turbo this morning(takes 10 minutes, seriously). Removed the exhaust housing and wastegate plate. Found this. 20mm wastegate port, 28.5mm flap valve and a serious mismatch in placement.

The nikko mark is to exaggerate how the mismatch is.
It just covers the hole at one side and is 10mm off on the other so I thought this would work to my advantage. I ported the hole out to ~25mm and profiled the inside of the housing to assist gas flow.

Also ground the WG plate away a bit to get a few mm more opening angle on the flap.

Put it all back together(another 10 minutes) and went for a run. Just sneaks up to 14 psi in the high revs. It's pretty stable really, creeps 1psi or so in the high revs.
    Victory is mine!
Only downside is the power loss. Easy fixed on our terms later though.

Here's the requested pic of the oil drain.

    Awesome work!

Hmm I need an oil drain very similar to the above, my current setup is an abomination and is far too bendy for my liking. Could I perhaps commission you to make a better one for me?

On car yep, don't know how I would go doing it by remote though.

No probs. PM me if you want something done with it when the car is going again.

jzk25 thats for the photo, looks exactly how i was going to setup mine, damn manifold builders don't compensate for oil drains

I get the impression my manifold was designed for a turbo with a reversed housing... although then I'd probably have clearance issues with the strut tower.

mine looks like it was made as a low mount haha, but i think a wastegate poking out the bonnet wouldn't be too appealiong for the fun police.

nor would it be safe to have a oil feed line trapped in heat from the collector.

I actually did a google image search of trust and HKS manifolds and, from what I can see, they run the oil drains in the same way as I have. Undoubtedly a bit more professionally though.

On the 2J cressida we had the sump fitting for the oil drain modified to point a different direction in an effort to try and smooth out the oil drain path but it still turned out way to tight and bendy.

The JZA80 NA - Aristo 2J conversion turned out the best. We used the original Aristo sump fitting on an A70 sump and made a drain with only a couple of gentle bends.

The thing is, every ebay manifold is different. In the angle of the turbo(in relation to parallel to the engine), closeness to the head and flatness of the turbo flange(tilt) and it all effects how the drain is positioned. Then throw in the variances of turbo cores and every setup is different.

At the end of the day, if it drains the oil to the sump, doesn't leak and doesn't contact or rub on anything else then it is doing it's job.

The good news is there is another JZ job coming our way. JZZ30 1J into MX83. Looking forward to hearing another JZ fire into life in it's new home.

Had this dynoed yet? I just put a KKR480 on my 1J and am having exactly the same problem as you were... its running 20psi in stock form. I might pull it apart and see if they've done the same thing!

I was making 240rwkw with massive clutch slippage and a screwed alternator not providing regulated power. I'm running a Microtech LTX12S and 800cc SARD injectors
