my 1j timing cover looked like that when I pulled it off. I had nothing to suggest why it may have happened. balancer was fine, tensioner fine, and after I replaced it I had no rubbing

The overall height is probably all I need to know, if there are any differences it's likely to be that. Thanks!

    Norbie,
Different heights between 1jz and 2jz covers as in the pics which corresponds with the different block heights. The one in the pics isn't in pristine condition but it is surplus to my needs - PM me your details if you want the one in the pics below sent to you to help you out.

    Heres a pick:

    Sizes are:
    A 205mm
    B 260mm
    C 250mm
    D 105mm

These are all approx because I had to use the tapemeasure. I couldn't find any of my steel rulers

Quick question - how the **ck do you the balancer off? Mine would not budge ever!!

I'd say knackered rubber is the cause or a previous flapping loose belt that jumped off.

Yep, gotta use a puller. There are threaded holes in the balancer which makes it easy. You'll also need a puller to get the timing belt pulley off, which is necessary if you want to replace the front main seal (and I recommend doing this if you're in there).
