Custom cams with no aftermarket support

also do you think theres any merit in getting cams off that Sirazul guy? he doesnt seem to like answering mail at the moment. Would he just be selling welded cams himself or is he C&C lathe/milling them?

do I have any other options?

Sirazul get his cams in Aus AFAIK, but I can't remember from who. I think he sells both kinds of reprofiled cam.

As Jezza mentioned Phil charges about $30 per lobe and $40 per stick.

no, they would not help with chipping. please try to explain it next time

nitriding is process where nitrogen goes into surface and solution strengthens the steel. if there is chromium etc there, it may form hard nitrides. it is only a very surface technique, it has little penetration (compared to say.. the usual induction hardening for cams).
nitriding is only done to reduce wear.
it is strange to do it on cranks.. unless you are expecting to run low oil pressure and want to save the crank from being reground when you spin a bearing

if something chips, it is either because there are internal stresses from the formation process (ie, from the hardface welding), or because the material is too brottle (ie, stellite).
the crack will propogate below the surface, deeper than nitriding will ever touch.
basically, hardfaced cams are prone to chipping, because of the complex metallurgy that occurs during the repeated melting and solidfying.. and because the filler metal is also relatively brittle...

that said, if the operator does a good job... they may nto chip at all
but if they have issues (they may not even be able to tell at the time), then it will suck

but if you have no choice.... you have no choice.

well I just got a quote form Clive cams, $780 for the weld and grind, so unless I sent it to antoher state that might be what I am stuck with.

4AFE come with either 28mm or 31mm buckets, depends on the type of head.
AFAIK all 7AFE are 31mm.

I would never used welded cams unless it was the absolute last resort. All of the issues with flaking etc happen. --its just a matter of time. I have several customers asking for FE cams but none of the usual billet suppliers are interested, because of the low volume and gear problems. I need orders for about 10 sets to get overseas suppliers interested in talking. it took years to get the 3SG billets which we now take for granted. They are now so cheap, we would never dream of welding up a 3SG cam.
