    Default 3vz-e/fe in a hulix

hey all im wondering if a 3vz-e/fe would be a good choice of conversion into my hilux??

its a 1992 extra cab 2WD hilux. i was thinking of a 1uz but due to p-plate laws the best i can do i a v6. i would try and keep it manual.

my budget at the moment is around $3000-$4500 so ive got a bit of money to play with.

any suggestions be it positive or negative are welcome.

    cheers

ive done a bit of research and ive found that luxs in america (known as pickups) and also the 4runners here used the 3vz-e and that they can take a bit of a blasting with stock internals.

any advice or opinions are welcome

if you are restricted by the new p plate rules, you will find that you arent allowed ANY engine conversions, pretty much if you need an engineers certificate you cant do it

At the risk of being deemed a heretic, if I had to, I would describe the 3VZ E as a lump of poo.

I don't know if there is a less fuel efficient engine made. It is an underwhelming lump of cast iron that was famous for blowing headgaskets.

The 5VZ-FE also had (different) headgasket problems in its first year (1996). Those seem to be more reliable, and more importantly are respectable in terms of power output.

    I wouldn't use a 3VZ-E for a boat anchor.

yea i thought of doing a 3rz for a while but i decided i wana go with a v6 or v8. 2jz would be good cept probs a bit heavier that a v6/v8??

as for restrictions not allowing engine conversions, thats only for the newer p-plates eg reds im on my greens n have been for a year now n looked at the guide that is in one of the general talk threads i think as to what you can and cant do to your cars and im allowed to. (its also my car is insured/regoed in the rents name so they can drive whatever )

i was thinking maybe go outside toyota and get a holden 3.8Lv6 of a ford4.0Lv6 but wana try and keep it in the toyota family

so a 5vz would be better if i wanted to go v6???

didnt you say you have the restrictions in place? as far as i can remember there has always been a no engine modification rule.

the restriction in place is no v8s, turbos or superchargers, there were sum rules as to engine mods but if the car model had one with the same engine ie there is a v6 hilux u are able to get it changed without being stopped

plus who in this world ever follows the rules to the letter. my local mechanic that does engineering certs said its ok and so did my boss n most of the guys at the garage i work at, a number of who are still on the green ps and own silvias, 200sxs and one guy with a hilux all of whom have done engine conversions n nothings happened to them

Much as it pains me to say this, but you're probably almost better off putting in the horrible Buick pile of garbage from a Commodore than the 3VZ-E. At least the engines are easy to get, cheap, parts are no problem, conversion kits exist, and all the toothless brigade will tell you how great it is...

yea i was talking to stitt last night and we came to the conclusion that a commodore engine would be better as their cheap as chips and parts etc are readily available and cheap plus they also produce sum pretty decent power with some gentle persuasion

ive found one for $200 on ebay with the auto gearbox attached, but im probably gona stick with the stock manual box already in the lux and eventually convert it to the celica 5spd (another of stitt's suggestions )

i just gota get my new table top tray which i should have by the end of the week then i can start getting parts etc for the conversion

would any1 know what exactly i will need to put it in? apart from engine mounts
