87.5mm OD, but varies slightly depending on the spring rate...

I just had a few thoughts today.

The way i suggested to mount the shock on the diff using a trailing arm style mount might not work as it wont allow the coil over to pivot. Although at the same time im wondering how much it moves anyways since the stop is just a shaft and two bushes which dont move a whole lot anyways.

An even better idea is i saw some inverted shocks in some other thread. If you used these you could mount the coilover with the spring on the bottom and then the shock would clear its cavity. Once again though i think this would interfere with the diff.

Depending on the OD of those hot rod style coilovers with the two eyelets for mounting you could always weld a mount in the shock cavity and run a bolt in the top.

If diff clearance is still an issue with anything the mount could always be moved towards the back of the car a little more.

Ninja edit: The TTT coil overs dont run a keeper spring (correct term) either?

Just noticed that its would right up too.

Ill also try and get a measurement of the shock clearance with the diff later tonight.

I had a look at the shock mount on the diff this afternoon. Didnt get any acurate measurements but the inner most part of the mount looked to be about 20-30mm out from the diff and placed about 100-150mm down from the top of the diff. With a shock on, it would probably be quite close to the diff and certainly too close to accomodate an inverted coil over.

Once again though, redesigning this mount could solve any clearance issues plus address the issue of it not being strong enough.

The lower mount is a problem fouling on the strut body, especially with the large collars the T3 setup has, from what I can measure.

Just on a tangent a bit - Is the upper-mount in the shell of the TA22 roughly the same profile as the 86 at all?

    Havent got an AE86 handy

Ill take a look at my friends ones next time theyre around but if anyone could have a gander before me that would be great. Since these coilovers dont bolt in to the 22 by the sounds of things i would say that the body mount for the shock between the two cars is a bit different.

Yeah, I will see if I can get pictures from mine perhaps.

Reasoning behind my interest is; Revolver, a company from JPN include a top-hat style alloy piece that seats in the upper mount with their coilover systems to provide support to the shell, so impact absorbsion isn't as straining to the 20yr old shell.

you can see them in the below image, at the top:

A bonus is, it offsets the strut from the mounting point slightly as well for alignment purposes. The strut screws into the top hat, which then seperately bolts to the frame.

could be a worth looking into if it is indeed the same shape...

Ahh, i think i remember, the 86 has the pointy towers, these are pretty different to the 22 which hasthis rectangle type tower come about 10" off the floor, its about 3" wide, and extends into the boot about 10". Hope you get the idea.

This has been done before on a 22 in the states but I cannot find the build info,it is located on classic-celica.com.

Other than that I have nothing to add but will happily copy the suggested means inwhich to do it when figured out

the big question i have to ask is WHY?

there's nothing wrong with the factory shock and spring arangement.
if you want/need adjustable hight then weld some adj platforms on the diff and its a job done, no need to beef up body panels or anything else and its done in an afternoon.

i dont mean to sound so negative but it just sounds like such a PITA why bother?

    cheers

I know what you're saying Linden, and whilst some people may not find this necessary, I still have a few reasons behind why I would like to.

I wanna get my car out on the track soon, and I want things to be adjustable. Also, when I get the 3TGTE in I would like to have suspension and brakes sorted out, so the car handles well and easier to control BEFORE I go upping the power. Yes you can do that with the factory rear suspension setup (to an extent) but why stop there?

The biggest reason of all for me is because I want to. We (toymodders) like to modify our cars. Its half the fun. Does Jaffa really need a twin turbo 1UZ with IRS rear end? Probably not, but its his hobby and passion, and most of all he wants to. Its just part of the fun of modifying a car Nothing is a PITA if you're looking for a challenge

if i knew how to upload pics id show you how i did mine.

instead of using coilovers i used the same sleaves, perches and lockrings (same as importbitz anyway) and cut the sleave halfway which will give you 45mm of hieght adjustment at the back.

i then welded them onto the diff housing in the same position as the std springs.

it was easy (and cheap) to do and only took a few hrs to have it all done.

coilovers are good but all you get from T3 is a set of AGX's with a 60mm id spring sitting on them with some machined perches.

    why not build it yourself?

    cheers

What did you do about upper spring seats?

If you send me the photos I can host them and link them here.
