    Default Cheap turbos? Which brands?

i know there are alot of 'evay special' turbos floating around and china/korean made turbos out there but has anyone here have any first hand experience with them?

After t25 flanged items for 4agte setup.
So either t28 or t25 sized turbos i suppose.Looking more for respoinse and good torque than all out power.

Ive seen some hypergear turbos that look ok, KKR (not so cheap but cheaper than Greddy etc), CGC etc. Can anyone reccommend something and pitch in there 2c.

    Cheers, Stu

How much power do you want (or more so how much power do you want to spend)?

a TD04l from a late model wrx will get you to 170kw atw on 18psi with all the right gear(bolt on mods)

Car already has t25 flanged exhaust manifold on it - just trying to work out some outlay before i go ahead. Plain bearing setup on the hypergears i take it? And no more than 180RWKW - tis a 4a so getting there may need too big a turbo for my liking. i dont really like lag and would much prefer the response.

Better to buy a new cheaper turbo or second hand t28 etc. this is the question

Im sorry i misread your first post about the t25 part. My apologies.

The TD04L wouldnt definelty be not an option for you. I have heard lots of good things about KKR turbos. Aslong as you can re-contact the seller easily if anything goes wrong.

why not just a genuine garrett. a GT2560R is only in the order of $1200 brand spanking new. genuine article not a knock off.

i have the dosh for something like that but id rather but the extra 600 hundred or so into brakes/suspension for the front end. Looking at the KKR 280 or 330. look to be ok, have heard good things from several people including HPI, nissansilvia project cars etc etc and they seemed to all have praise for them.

WOuld a 330 be too big for this app if i want no lag, and conversely would i run out of puff with a 280?

Hi mate, i've installed a fair share of ebay and KKR turbos (also go as JJR).

This is what i can say. If your going to stoop and get a KKR or JJR DO NOT GET IT OFF EBAY! These turbos are actually stocked by a few performance shops, make sure you get a warranty! They had a really bad batch not too long ago of the T3 flanged ones and they just kept failing. Blowing seals and becoming unballanced and bearings dieing.

The Ebay special T04E's and the like, are actually not too bad now. At one stage, especially the 'XS Power" ones were literally 'falling apart'. The housings were made in two halves and just becoming seperated! Although i've install two of the newer ones and haven't had any poblems with them as yet, but they are only running low boost!

Just be weary mate, you can pick up recon'd turbos for arround the $1000 mark from most specialist turbo joints!

I'd rather pay $1000 outright for a known decent turbo than pay 1/3 that but have to pull it off 3 times for warranty (which happened to one car within a 2month period).

For $2k he would have been set, but in the end it cost him over $4k just for a $650 saving on the turbo! hhmmm

    Be Careful!

Just to add further... i fitted a T2 flanged KKR onto my mates 180SX... it's still working fine but has that police siren whine that normal turbos usualy get when they are on their way out!

A friend of mine has one of those eBay special T04E turbos on his VL, it's been in for about 6 months and hasn't had any problems yet, although given the price ($600 including manifold and wastegate!) you have to wonder.

Apparently the Brazilian MasterPower turbos have a good rep in the US, lots of big power Supras are using them over there. Not quite as cheap as the Chinese ones but from all reports they're very sturdy and are constructed using the same machinery as Garrett.

Brother got a 'MonstA' turbo for his Z. Locally shipped.
Was actually not a bad unit. They go for insanely cheap
Needed to be taken apart and clean from all the metal shavings and stuff from the factory machining.
Also needed some machining on the inside of the flange to match up to the manifold, but still running strong.
Wastegate is a POS though :

I'd say get yourself a Ball Bearing T28... Try CVAP... The S15s came with them, and I think the GTI-Rs came with them also...

Power and response x Cheap price =

the S14 (plain) and S15 (BB) T28's are a great piece of kit for any motor up to 2L, with their small 0.64 T2 Exhaust housing they spool really well and have got legs to around the 180RWkW mark.

the N14 GTiR example has a plain bearing (I know I've got one) along with a 0.86 T2 rear housing, a little more laggy on the CA (to be truthful) but nicer above 7000.

Even the T25G off the S13 wouldn't be a bad option for a 4AGE, but $ for $ a good S14 T28 is hard to beat for what you're after.

    Cheers

    P.S: the T28 uses a Garrett T3 60trim front wheel.
