your W58 should have a cable speedo drive - in which case your AE82 speedo cable will connect no problems.
The gearing for the speedo drive might be incorrect for your car, but at least you will have a speedo!!
Hey all
Well time is rapidly approaching where i must put the 86 back together, as many of you are aware i fitted a W58 during the conversion, and i need to have a speedo hooked up somehow. Is there a commonly known solution to this, is the W58 even a cable driven speedo? Im pretty sure it is but stranger things have caused me to make false assumptions before!
Cheers Guys

...... butt scratcher?!
I have the same problem, i will probably just get something made up for me by Ringwood speedo's in Vic, he seems to do all this sort of stuff.
my ae71 cable went straight in from memory.
you may need an angled drive off a cressy if yours hits the gbox xmember.
cheers

i dont have a funny or cool signature.
The T50 speedo housings are M22 x 1.5 thread size. Let me know what the W58 are![]()
I'll confirm your T50 speedo cable will fit into and work perfectly with the W58 speedo drive. Well perfectly apart from the possible error due to different diff ratios and tooth counts.
It's as simple as unplug cable from T50. Fit W58*. Plug cable into W58. Enjoy functioning speedo.

*NB the effort of actually fitting the W58 to a Sprinter has been glossed over here.
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
Thanks Hen, the gearbox wasnt that hard though!Originally Posted by Hen
There's been harder aspects of the conversion, trust me!

Fitting a W58 to a AE71/AE86 is easy as shit, Auto Xmember, bellhousing and put it in, whats hard about that?
Apart from the difference in ratio's (if applicable) - shouldn't have any trouble with the speedo drive.
If you can find a 5km test thing on the highway, stick to 100kms/h and see what difference your trip counter shows, work that into a % and take it into account with your daily driving. The 22's speedo worked out at 5% quicker than reality, so if it showed 105kms/h than I would be doing 100kms/h. The error rate would rise the faster I drove, so at 160kms/h I would be doing 152kms/h - 5% / 160 = less 8kms
Very basic method, but good enough!!
the w58 box has the same speedo cable as the T50 and also the w57. You just have to be carefull about what the w58/57 came from as there are different shifter positions. I have 2 w57 boxs here with different shifter position - you want the one that is out of a supra with the shifter at the very end of the box. Not the celica one with the mid shifter!!!
