As said above, generally there is a rubber seal around the thermostat and with out it, you can't make a propper seal, so it will leak... A new thermostat and seal will set you back $20, just buy one from your local toyota dealer...

It has all been said before but if I were you...

    1. Check for any obvious leaks
    2. Don't be cheap and replace thermostat
    3. Check the radiator cap by looking to see if there is pressure in system, also burp the system (run car with the heater on, on a slope, so the filler cap is the highest point till all the air bubbles dissapear).
    4. Check to see if the system is flowing.
    5. Check that the thermofans work correctly.
    6. Get the system Teekay tested, In my experence, it has diagnosed 3/3 of my BHGs

You should have your anser... From what you have said "bubbles in overflow", that tells me you have air in your coolant system, so make sure you burp it, and if there is a constant stream of them... well get a teekay test done

in regard to the bubbles, if they're big bubbles, this is a good thing, as its just air.

but if your getting lots of tiny bubbles and frothing, BHG.

heres a picture of what my camry radiator looked like within 2 mins of starting it up from dead cold.

remarkably, it neither ate coolant, lost it in any way, or ever overheated.

    weird ass car that was!!!

    Hmmm thats interesting...

Ive had that happen on 2 of my cars, only when I had just done work on the cooling system, I put the froth down to crc/degreaser left over from when I was working, cleared up eventually.

A little constant stream of bubbles though, good sign of a bhg...

yann: is the radiator lower than the head? (being in a 180?) might have trouble bleeding the air out?

    - if the heater hoses are still the highest point in the cooling system you could try making sure you bleed all the air out of there... maybe like a T piece in the highest point of the hose so you can put a hose and bottle or something on for bleeding?

if that could be the issue that is..

ok ive replaced the thermostat with a new one,ive replaced the 1j temp sender unit with an sr20 one to match the factory gauge and checked that the thermos come on nice and early and pulled the smoke throught the right way.
i also jacked up the front to get the rad at the highest point and found that only big bubbles came out occassionaly no little ones.
so far so good, not over heating at idle but i want to give it a workout before im convinced
