Yeah chance are very low.....
Same as the chances of my brake master cylinder failing into Northern at 200km/h
Same as the chances of the "inflammable" filter socks catching on fire
Im a firm believer that a bastard irish man named Murphy owned my car in a previous life. Im buying new bolts.
That being said breaking 8 at once is a rarity, and most if not all of the flywheel explosions i have seen are from dodgy lightened stock flywheels.

hold up, im wondering to meself.
is the "problem" you lot are talking about a or b:
a - the bolts coming loose
or
b - the bolts sheering/snapping
!??!?!
Elmo.
Either A or B.
The problem comes in that if A happens to one bolt, then more bolts are likely to either A or B until the entire thing Bs.... and in a modified car revving to 9000rpm with an open exhaust, and you wearing a helmet, you arnt going to notice A or B until it detaches your legs.

taki's point is valid...lightening stock flywheels is poor form.

ah, i see your point.
so, if your running a street car/weekender thats got a stock clutch, you wouldnt worry about it so much, as is spillers/my application?
Elmo.
this discussion has got you a little worried too now hasnt it Eldar
mine is an OS twin plate as of tomorrow morning...weekender yes but will be thrashed. bouncing off rev limiter all the time, no

slightly off topic: are you allowed to reuse the flex plate bolts on a 1jz auto?![]()
Yeah, i woudlnt worry about it in that situation so much. Heck my daily ive reused the bolts heaps of times. Im just paranoid about the race car because the ONLY time its NOT being thrashed is when its driving on and off the trailer.Originally Posted by EldarO
From what i understand autos are a different matter, as they dont have the same sort of shock loading as a clutch, especially a multiplate savage clutch. The TC takes up the brunt of the changes and leaves it relatively ok. Plus its a lot thinner and lighter (the flex plate) so the bolts have a lot less weight and thickness to shear. That being said, i have seen photos of a flexplate in the dash. Ill find them.Originally Posted by chris davey
Although i think that noob shifted into reverse at 100km/h and blew the trans and the flexplate together.

not at all mate, if it hasnt happened after 10 months of the way i drive + a savage clutch, its never going to, plus i whole heartedly trust the person who installed its' judgement (Matty wildsupra) im just curious.Originally Posted by spiller
obviously with different applications, different measures need to be taken, and i thank Takai for clearing that up, although this is just his opinion, it is obviously a well thought out, and valid one

i agree, my flywheel has stayed on since ive had the car (almost 2 years) and god knows how old the bolts in there are. it hasnt had an easy life either. there are specific torque settings for a reason![]()

Oh yeah, the only reason im replacing the flywheel bolts on the 2JZ is that one has gone walkies. I.e. i only have 7, so while im shelling out for one new one i may as well shell out for a pack of ARP ones.
