But if that is the case, and these bearings and retainers need to be pressed on, how on earth do you get the axles in and out of the car? Some serious force?

    Cheers,
    Jase
axles go out of the housing by taking off drum, unbolting the backing plate and
then jarring the axle out ( put drum on backwards and wind on the nuts a couple of
turns on then push plate inwards and yank plate towards you throwing yourself backwards.
after a few goes you will be arse over tit with one axle half out and a smile on your face.)
it comes out with the bearing / collar / circlip / backing plate assembly all together.

axles go on by sliding axles into housing and into the diff centre spline. no need to use
much force. then bolt up backing plate.

collar is removed by hydraulic press or cut off carefully by
grinder/hacksaw/dremel 90% way through and cold chisel and hammer.

collar goes on by heating the collar and sliding it on.

Ok I remember bits of when I did mine now. For starters you shouldn't need to do anything fancy to get the axle out (I know yours are out but this will help others).
Unbolt the 4 14mm bolts that hold the axle assembly onto the diff housing.
Disconnect the handbrake cable. On my Hilux ('94 RN85) i just ripped the drum apart (backing plate remains on the axle) but you may be able to disconnect the cable at the other end.
Disconnect the brake hose and plug it.
One sharp pull now should have the axle loose and you can slide it out.
Never leave your axles half out or it will wreck the oil seals. Always either remove the axle completely or push it back it when not working on it.
The Bearing, retainer, and circlip should all be on the axle.
Remove the circlip with the correct circlip pliers. Remove the Retainer by cutting or heating (I heated). Remove the bearing (I can't remember how I did it).
Installing is the exact opposite. When you insert the axle, make sure the splines are aligned correctly and the axle should slide in until there is about 10mm hanging out (it gets tight). Use the 4 14mm bolts that hold the axle in to pull it up tight. Torque these to 69Nm.

It was a while ago when I last did this, so if I've gotten something wrong let me know.

    Cheers
    Dave
