Front Timing Pulley

Im stripping down my 2jzgte at the moment for an inspection and head recond before putting it into my hilux
and i have removed the front timing belt crank pulley

At the rear of this is the chopper wheel for the cas

Am i right in thinking this wheel should have no movement at all?

Mine can move back and forward a few millimetres each way and im thinking this could cause some wierd timing readings from the cas

Is this how they are or should i replace it ?

there will be some movement, due to needing clearance for fitting.

here is a pic of the one on the 1UZ. as you can see there is some clearance between the trigger wheel and the keyway.

I'm not sure how much clearance is too much though...where are you measuring the few millimetres? if thats at the outer edge of the trigger wheel (i.e. at the teeth) its probably insignificant. (do you mean few millimetres total movement, or few mm in each direction from the middle, i.e. total movement is 2*few mm? If its the latter id be concerned...)

Is this a separate piece that won't be sandwiched in between other parts & locked down TIGHT when the crank bolt is torqued, possibly slightly out of position but pretty much immovable ?

7M-GTE MX73's pic shows the timing belt guide plate having some movement, the actual timing belt drive gear should be a very nice tight fit however.

I had to use a puller on the last xJZ timing belt gear I removed.

Have you checked the condition of the keys?

There should be sweet FA movement in it!

yes the gear itself is tight on the crank keyway but on the rear of the gear(not the guide at the front)there is a wheel pressed onto the gear but this has the movement
i will try to get some pics to confirm what im talking about

The outer ring is able to move on the pressed gear a few millimetres either way
I am correct in thinking this could provide less than accurate signals from the cas and possibly causing issues or would it not be enough to worry it

interesting.... I'm 90% sure that when I changed that pulley on my 2jz there was no movement in the trigger ring (but that was about a year ago, so my memory could be failing me)

There should most definitly be zero movement on that section! The trigger wheel should be fixed to the gear.

As you say if there is movement then the timing will be up the the shitter.

I'd try to line it up in the correct factory orientation (borrow a spare to compare or?) and spot weld it in the corect position would be my suggested fix (grind back the spot welds as required for clearance...).

I can take a scan of my 2jz-gte trigger wheel off the engine atm if that might help with the lining up?

And the reason they come loose is people dont remove the timing belt guide before pulling the timing pulley off .
The belt guide is a small alloy bit that bolts just beside the pulley in which the trigger wheel catches on when removed.

That makes sence i was wondering how it happened
Although i did remove that first but it was loose before i removed it so maybe it happened when they changed the timing belt
Thanks for the offer wilbo of the scan but i might just buy a new one that way i know it will be spot on and i wont have to worry
they are quite cheap anyway
