Default 7mgte black smoke on boost

Just bought a soarer and getting black smoke when coming on boost. When this happens the car starts to bog down.

Most probably fuel issue? How do I fix it?

Front mount. Running 7 pound of boost (according to prev owner) no boost guage. It was previously running 14 pound and after they redid the headgasket put it back to standard. Other than that is just got a pod filter. Everything else looks pretty much standard.

I am however getting a check engine light. Does anyone have a link to an online manual so I can get it to throw a code?

    lean?

running them rich is a way off keeping them relatively cool and preventing detonation.

id bet on a leak in the piping after the AFM making ya run lean.

    AFM cars FTW!!!

Yeah black smoke when boosting is normal.

If it's really dirt black then there's probably just a build up of crap in there to make it worse

Just use BP ultimate for a few weeks and change the oil every 2500km instead of the standard 5000km. Should clean it up a bit.

Wouldn't worry too much about anything else. If it starts blowing black smoke regularly (even when idling), then it's time for new piston rings or valve seals or even better... a 1J.

Running rich it sounds. its bogging down because it's dumping too much fuel in i'd say.(more boost could fix that ) get a boost guage first though.

check engine light could be o2 sensor? need to check for codes though obviously.

Just sounds like standard 7M ECU to me. They run pig rich as soon as they hit boost. It's a factory feature

Turbo spins nice and free and not much shaft play. Didn't notice heaps of oil in intake. I pulled 3 errors from the computer.

22 - Water temp sensor signal
34 - Turbo pressure (abnormalites in the AFM may also be detected.)
51 - No "IDL, NSW or A/C" signal to ecu

So basically I need new water temp sensor and new AFM? The error 51 I assume is because I didn't have car in neutral when checking. Both these tie in with overfueling.

22 could be a problem, if the ECU doesnt know when the engine is up to running temp it may keep running a rich mix as it would for a cold engine. Does it idle high?

34 will happen if you hit the boost cut, not sure about the other

Most turbo cars ive known blow black smoke when they hit boost. My mates car does it, but it's over-fuelling.

If there's an abnormally large amount of smoke then it could be from carbon build up in the exhaust also contributing
