for people that are thinking that 9mm is enough thread (like GU11TY ) if your thread pitch is 1.25mm, the nut will only be on 7 threads of the nut/stud, deffinatley not enough!,

As a general rule the Australian standard for nut Capture is 1.5 x the bolt dia. This is to take up the slack for tensile forces in the bolt so the whole nut is being used.

As for scrutineering if you plan on drag racing it have a look att he ANDRA rule book. They require open ended nuts and I believe the stud has to go all the way through and then some.

For those looking at this and thinking about their street car... I wouldnt use open ended nuts on a street car as the dirt/grime/corrosion build up on the end of the bolt will make removing the nut after 2 years driving when you get a flat an absolute PITA.

Race cars are a different kettle of fish, as you dont have as much crap coming up from the road, and you generally remove the wheels quite often to inspect/service the brakes/drivetrain.

Linden, good to know that the NICE studs are oversized, that will be handy to know while doing my SA23 conversion.

1.5 times is the correct answer. The idea is to have the stud break before the nut pulls off by shearing the thread. It's much easier to design because you use the stud root diameter. Also, if anyone has ever done technical drawing at school, the 1.5 is what they drill into you.

Ended up getting off of ebay. For $30 for ten. They cam zinc plated and all. Very happy with the quality.
To be honest i wasnt expecting much for $30 but i was very surprised.
