POD Filter Comparisons and Experiences

i got a blitz sonic power

my halfcut never came with an airbox so i had to use something and i got this for nothing
so meh

i have no idea about flow or filtration of it
but the metal heat shroud dealy it has around it would greatly help keep hot air away from going into it, the main problem with pod filters

+ it doesnt look much like a pod when in the car so perhaps police who dont really have a clue wont be able to pick it out so quickly

allthough when i bought it this confused me

As long as its covered they don't give a toss.

so what places sell them locally? K&N is easy enough to get, what about Apexi superintake and the HKS Airinx, any places in sydney

this is wrong.
even if you have designed your own little airbox around it etc its still illegal and unable to be engineered
u can only engineer a filter which is the same shape as the original.

ive been through all this when i tried to get my car fully engineered and this is what the engineer told me

but.. putting a pod filter in a standard airbox.. is.. dumb..

compare the flat panel area to the pod area.... duh....

so all the air goes into the end bit? that area is FAR LESS than any stock airbox... seems not so good... my 1.5c

well foam usually isn't used in 'performance' applications, it's more used for filtering out the heavy particles of dried-up road, dust, etc. it's more widely used on fourby's, but either cotton gauze or foam, it still needs lubrication to do the job effectively. K&N recharge kit is used for panel filters and pod filters alike, and there's a special type of filter oil you use with foam filters. I had Redline foam socks over ITB trumpets in my old Scorpion, sounded horn (pun).

for filtration and flow, I'm sticking with a K&N panel filter for the ST202 airbox I'm trying to source. but if you're a kW-hunter, sign up for a Toymods sticker, and there's your MR2's +10rwkW straight off the bat!

bottom-line - as has been said in here a few times, air filters are not to be used as a means to extract a significant power increase, but to help your engine flow/filter more air and 'breathe' better.

I used these and found them to suck on my racecar. fires and shit

yeap sounded nice at 7500rpm coming down the straight though

The Blitz and Airinx type I wouldn't use if you gave them to me for free.

I had one customer with an MR2 turbo who was burning oil. Lots of sand and dust in the intake, and massive cylinder bore wear.

What a waste of an engine.

From what I've read over at bobistheoil they tend to go for a good replacement paper element filter for the best filtration over a K&N etc...These are guys who are getting oil analysis done and can show the different in figures back to back.

with the K&N it depends on how thick you oil it too. good filtration - poor flow

little oil

poor filtration - good flow

thats my theory but they work and im sticking with it.

That is an interesting article. i was surpised at how badly the hks pod filtered.
Also they seemed to pick up pretty big hp gain with the filters, no 4-5hp for them.I wonder what engine they were testing them on?
Just to contradict my earlier tight arse stance i bought i nice and chunky k&n filter today at supacheap for $60-score.

I'd be interested to know! The other two articles were on a low-powered car, where the air filter is not a major bottleneck. Seeing the tests done on a 500hp 2JZ or something would be far more interesting. Ensuring consistency and avoiding heatsoak would be sooo hard though.
