Take it to a paint shop and let them whip blast it.

I would think a sand blaster would be pretty good, but I have to ask why would you care?

the 2 middle cylinders are gone, and all the gunk has gone into the header piping. I've scrapped away most of the gunk, but it'ld be nice to get rid of it all.

why not take the exhaust manifold off, and bring it to the car-wash, for 2 bucks you get 5 minutes or something?

... cause you can write your name in the dirt-encrusted floor of the garage/carport/... area with the fine nozzle on the sprayer?

try spraying WD40/RP7 or whatever in there and let soak for a day or two... and then try to scrape off?

alternatively, if you put it in an oven at around 800C, in air or oxygen rich, it will decarburise

    I use between 150 - 180PSi of air (From a large compressor)

Works wonders, just becareful, shit flys everywhere, and don't hit your skin. Air bubbles under the skin can kill.
