Like most of the others here that have a catch can and have seen what comes out I wouldn't recommend putting it back into the engine. Just replace with fresh oil.

Here's a link to photos I took of the baffled one I made.

I think the main problem with non returning catch cans is the water in the oil. Oil being hydroscopic, over time if the catch can is not emptied im sure there would be some water in the oil. Thats why im looking to come up with a good working system that will separate the oil/air mist and return all the oil to the sump. This way the air that contains the water excapes and is not attracted to the oil.

I had a problem with my 3sge. Oil pressure in the oil sump was high, and prevented oil at the head from draining back down. Oil level was gathering in the head, that it eventually topped the fume-line and was pumped back through the throttle body, resulting in an ugly blow of smoke.
i now have 2 lines to relieve the built-up pressure, one from the head to the catch-can and 2nd from the sump (above the oil level obviously) to the catch can. There is another line to drain this oil back into the sump.
complicated...but it works a treat.,....not a hint of smoke now!

also try and run your hoses up before the drop down into the catch can.

this way if you get a large amount of oil buildup in a short time that tries to make its way out it'll simply drain back in to the head.

i'll take some pics of my setup tomorrow if i get the chance

i have a weeny catchcan that gets excess oil in it courtesy of oil being flung off the cam chain and i didn't put a baffle in place... and the colour/thickness of the collected tells me that it would be way wrong to return it to the sump.

black, thick stuff gunk not good for re-use and regular checking of oil in sump and the catchcan is no big issue (and should be done before/after any race meeting anyway).
