inrush can be a problem. good for blowing fuses and melting wires.
alot of the servers at work have stupid inrush (startup draw) but we run 32a 3 phase to the racks so its never really a problem....
wraith made a really good point - and something you wanna check with your council as i've just done this.
my footings (foundations) were 800mm deep and 600mm wide. i built a 6 x 5.5 and that had 9 footings in it. 100mm only slab but in some places it was 150-200mm
i had to have a "shadow" diagram drawn up by an architect due to the height of my shed (which is only 2.1 in the wall but 2.4 in the peak) to show that the shed would not affect the amount of light to any of my neighbours adjacent properties. this may affect the height of the shed you need to build.
building the shed is quite easy (although i had it done - cost me $800 but money well spent) plus the electrics were $900 done plus the cost of the shed was 3.5k plus the site levelling/prep was $900 plus the cement was about 500 plus a couple of slabs for my good neighbours and mates to help put it down.
    it all adds up.

Im lucky with resources. My mate has a bobcat so site prep will be easy enough. We will be doing the cement and shed build (me and and two other blokes) and I have another mate who is a sparky.

Unfortunalty we have to remove about 5 trees and build a retaining wall at the back before we can start the shed.

The sheds Ive been looking at are around 10k so I doubt I'll have much left from $20k when I finish.

Do you get along well with your neighbours because that can play a huge part in getting approval for a shed too.

Dont really know any of my neigbours. I cant imagine any of them causing problems though. We havent done anything to piss them off over the years.

except maybe respraying my supra under the carport.

I have a hoist in my shed, which I just dyna-bolted to the 100mm slab that was there. (Having rung a certified installer for that brand of hoist to ask what was required) However, the legs on mine probably spread the load a bit:

It occupies one bay of a 3-bay shed; the bay it is in is 4.6m wide by 6.1m long. It is big enough, but if I was building a shed from scratch I would have gone a little bigger - maybe 6.5 or 7 deep. The lights you can see in the pic are 3m off the floor. The peak of the roof is 4.3m. The shape and pitch of my roof means I can get away with a 'smaller looking' shed and still have room for a 4WD up there. But 3.5m to 4m is probably a bit of a minimum (unless you only work on convertibles ...).

Mind you, the posts on my hoist are 2.7m high. On the other hand, the hoist you want must lift closer to the top of the post, otherwise only pygmies could work under it

Oh, and I forgot to mention, mine is 240v single phase. It runs happily on the dodgy, variable power out here in the bush. It starts up fine, even with the full weight of the vehicle already on it. The lights don't even dim when it starts. If you are blowing fuses and melting wires, you need to sack your electrician (or stop buying dodgy hoists from eBay )

Sure, go 3 phase if you already have it (or really want it for other equipment) - but it's a bloody expensive upgrade if all you want to do run is the hoist.

Send me a message when you want to know about the power requirements. Ill let you know what sized cable/CB you will need to start and run this sucker. The cable doesnt need to be able to withstand the inrush current, you just need to make sure the breaker will trip if you get a seizure. Also running a D curve breaker will save you going too far overboard with the sizing. I have all the info (as well as standards) at work to sort all that out for you. You will have to let me know how far from your switchboard to the shed, and all loads in the shed (how many power points, how many 15A points, how many lights, heaters, fans, powered doors, hoist etc), but it wont take me long to work out the cable and breaker requirements, max demand etc.

thanks O-man, I'll PM you when Ive got it all planed out. I think I'll stick to single phase. I dont have 3 phase and not sure I want to drop the cash to get it.
