    Question Paint, How Much?????

Hey fello forum people's im back inpired again on my project (will update in members ride soon)

ANYWAY what i need to know is how much should i expect to pay for a bare metal respray??? The car is already stripped down will need minimal bodywork and i will be going for a mettalic 2-pac...

And before anyone sais i do relise this is a pretty open ended quiestion (how long is a piece of string?) I will be looking for a fair decent job, im not talking a crazy full on show car job but if all goes well i will put it in a few shows but i do want to drive it and not store it in a carpeted garage....

Oh and lastly im in Adelaide so if anyone can recomend a mob that would be cool and better yet if someone has a good example of a value for money decent paint job from a place in SA that would be great

    Cheers in advance all,
    Bradley

you will need to take the car to the panel shop to get a quote....

painting is the cheap part, the prep work is expensive.....

ive been quoted between $3000 - $6000 for a MINI....thats striping it back to a shell myself...and having them do the prep/paint.........includes engine bay/boot/ inside doors exc......

you can never get a straight out price from a panelshop...

    good luck, blake

Yeh like blake said the price is so variable that even an answer here is likely to be vastly different when you actually get quotes. Although you have already stripped it back the panel shop may have to go over everything youve done again so you dont end up saving money. Im gunna say it could be anywhere between $2000 and $10000 but prob closer to $6000.

Im doing all the prep myself... right up to primer.
Its a real *bitch* of a job, easy to see why shops charge so much for a good job.

Ive found a guy that will do the top color coat for $400 (im supplying the paint).
Thats for 2 days labor... any more than that, and the price will go up.
Ive seen his workshop, booth, and some of his finished work... all looks good.

The best value for money, bare metal 2K (2 Pack) spray job I've ever seen is shelldrake's TA22 which cost him $3500 which is an absoulte bargain believe me...

I'm an ex spray painter and I can't pick many faults with the job he had done, there's two or three things that I can see, but that's with a trained eye...

It's also as good as alot of top end spray jobs I've seen...

I would budget a minimum of $4500 (unless you bring it to Vic for the guy shelldrake used) for a nice bare metal 2K respray, providing, of course, that you don't have much reapair work needed... Including rust needing to be cut out...

High end resprays will set you back about $8000 miniumum...

yeah i can understand how prices can be so diffrent, and how much work goes into it, but im always intrested to know a rough estimate, and to see how the job turns out int he end.

most shops wont touch a car if you did the prep, coz if something goes wrong then you blame them, and they blame your prep and it get very ugly. just a heads up, talk to the shop you want to do your work before you start the prep. seems youve found someone to do yours though..

I am fairly happy with my paint job on my car. It was resprayed 7 years ago, Is it possible to get a light rub back and a few levels of clear applied or will they want to redo the whole kit and kaboodal.

to be honest, its pretty hard to find some1 (unless its a mate) to just put paint on a car, its all about the prep work that makes a paint job, i learned the hard way, i did a quick job for a so called mate, he did all the prep work and i just sprayed on the cheap paint he supplied, told him that i wouldnt take any responsibility, he wasnt happy wit it as the prep work was pretty shit, he tried to blame me for all the ripples and sand scratches, and cause i was the 1 who put the paint on, it was me that got the blame as he and his druggo mates thought it was the paint, no mateer how many ppl he went and saw to get advice on the matter, he and his mates still blamed me for his dodgy prep work!!

if this guy is doing it for that much, its pretty good, but just be warned, if the prep work is crap, no matter how good the painter is, its still gonna be a crap job under the paint.

as for a reasonable price, for a same color respray wit minimal body work, i would quote around $2k plus materials, for a full complete color change bare metal job wit a reasonable amonut of body work, i would charge around $5k upwards plus materials, alot of ppl dont really know how much work there is in a paint job, it takes around 4 hrs to paint a car, but sometimes over 100 hrs to prep it.

good luck wit your car, hope it comes out the way you wnat it.

Ahhh I have never had a problem talking to shops about putting on the final coat, there is a big difference between a shitty job because of bad prep and shitty job because of shit paint application. Before you intend to do anything, find a shop and speak with them, ask what they prefer, some will want all the doors off etc and some will simply want to just spray the thing in one hit. They will also prefer different types of primer etc or preferably the same brand they use as the paint...speak with the guy first hand and get a range of quotes, for instance if there is a hollow in the bonnet can he call you and hi fill and sand it back for you for an extra 200 or so. What if you cut it all back to bare metal and let them fix from the spray putty/hi fill onwards etc..

When i spray mine I will prep it all myself apply the hi fill and primer to ensure its all straight, from there I will leave it to the experts to finish it off and after I put it back together probably truck it back over for a buff. All up with the best paint I can get my hands on I dont for see paying anymore than $1700 -$2200.

I know all too well how painful it can be if you do the prep and get someone to do it. I gave up arguing with them when they did a shit job. The best bit is they've prepped it and managed to rub through my por15 yay! I love rust

Thanks all for the replies, currently the car is sitting in puddy primer and has been that way for a few years , i do understand that i will have to be sanded back so basically i would like to sand it back to bare metal (to maybe save a few bucks) then hopefuly leave the rest to the pro's, clean up the sanding, prime, fill, paint, finish n buff etc

i would hope to maybe get away with $3000 but i understand i may be more likely to be spending about $5000, but yea anymore advice would be great and once again if anyone knows of a proven place in Adelaide please pass me on some details

    Cheers all,
    Bradley
