Thanks guys. Ill hunt around to see what i can find.

Strad- Did you use a 3'' inlet outlet and step it down, or did you find a similar intercooler with smaller inlets?

    Thanks for the links.

when i bought mine they had no 2" in stock so I took 2.5".

then I bought some cooler pipes off DQKIST that were previously made for a 1G RA23 .... which were 2" at the inlets and 2.5" at the cooler.

no reason why you couldnt use 2.5" - 2" reducers either straight or 90degree ones to pass through the front end.

my drivers side i cut to fit 2.5"silicon through .... passenger I managed to squeeze it through although the silicone is square now where it passes through the front

    hasnt failed yet

I've yet to come across a W2A intercooler setup where the owner is happy with the money they spent. In theory it's a great idea but in practice the bang for your buck just isn't there. For a relatively low powered engine it might be OK but A2A is always going to be better at any price point.

true dat true dat .... plus as already highlighted by Pube .. way less complications
    in A 2 A setups when compared.

But for efficiency and not having a ghey rock catcher at the front of your car, you cant beat WTA. If you look at the thermal characteristics of water, it can draw out way more heat from the air than an ATA can, and in a much smaller space, meaning much shorter intake runners, and better throttle response.

So WTA wins marginally on efficiency and response, but looses out on complexity of installation, weight of components and overall cost?

I think I know what most 1G -> celica guys are chasing

You still need a "big rock catcher" for the heat exchanger.

Bang for buck ata Front mount is the way to go
efficiency wise water air would win, almost, every time.
There are exceptions (eg. freezing morning driving).

as there are too many variables as to how well a water to air works, Volume of water, size of heat exchanger(s) (intercooler, coolent heat exchanger, the type of water pump, how far the intercooler is from the induction, piping). I only say all of this as I have a 22 with a 1gt and room is of value. I went wta and it's cool but it does cost extra.

I'd say to keep it simple go the Front mount / ata. cheap and simple.
Otherwise if you want to go through considering all the other stuff have fun with it : )

In theory, yes. In practice, it doesn't work that good. At least none of the ones I've seen/heard of have.

Maybe I should blow air through the water galleries in my block Wont need to worry about all that expensive coolant etc. Oh, and the heat exchanger for a WTA doesnt need to be all that big, so much less chances of catching rocks. When you see the end result of my SA23 setup, you might see why I say so. Also something you need to remember with a WTA setup, the rate of flow needs to be capped... running the water through too quick is a bad thing.

I look forward to it. I'm willing to change my opinion, but you'll excuse me if I remain sceptical in the meantime.

Ill excuse you... only because you dont know better. Also my plans for the Celica are flexible... and my current idea for intercooling was only formulated last week and is still not completely defined in my head But it should fit in well with the rest of my ideas.

I love all these awesome ideas you get Owen, that will *definately* be confirmed when you test them sometime far in the future.

I'm guessing none of your WTA opinions are based on experience, but more on others' rantings and theoretical arguments.

I've never had a WTA setup, so not going to argue the disadvatages, but I think ppl would prefer to be convinced by someone with perhaps more experience in WTA experimentation.

I appreciate your ambition and willingness to pass in theoretical opinions however
