    Default Intercoolers for 1G ra28's?

I have been looking around for ages at what others have been doing with their intercooler setups on their 1G 28's. I have noticed that some are using a 400x300x76 item, others have used custom or different items. I have seen references to ebay intercoolers, at the bottom end of the price scale. Are these the 400x300x76 that hyper performance are selling on ebay atm?

What have you guys found fits well, works well, is easy to hook up etc?

just jap cooler plus 2inch piping requires no hacking .... pipes run through bumper support
    holes.

Ignore the squished left side as it is 2.5inch .. and i cut the hole larger.
In hind site I would have gone 2inch tosave cutting.

    Edit: Factory grill fits

Thought about a Water to Air intercooler?? Much more efficient, and you dont need a stone catcher infront of your radiator then too.

why did the 1g go air-air intercooler for gen 2 and 3 if the water-air was more efficient?

Why did the 3S-GTE go to WTA for WRC if it isnt??

EDIT: WTA probably was still in the development phase when 1G-GTEs were being manufactured, and so wasnt ready yet. WRX's gain 40hp from WTA with no other mods due to the lower intake temp and the greater timing advance they are capable of running. To use your analagy, 3S-GTE were ATA for Gen 1&2, and went WTA for Gen3

Never really thought about a water to air unit. I have looked at the just jap store on ebay, they had a few different ones. nothing with a 2 inch inlet though.

im using the 1ggte water to air intercooler setup in my corona, have a look at my thread in the members rides section. I have found it so far to perform quite well and it stays very cool. I have a 16" PWR heat exchanger out the front and a water reservior at the front passenger side of the engine bay. I will be testing out a water and ice combo at dyno day.

However, I did find it to be a big pain in the ass to run all the water lines. 3/4 hose does not bend too well which makes it difficult to run neatly in confined places. Then again, a bit of patience and persistance and it worked out well.

Bent stainless fixed pipes FTW (will cost more), then use flexible joiners at the IC (reservior and heat exchanger dont move and can use screw fittings)

I run 2.5" pipes with 2" inlets on what is essentially an ebay core, and it fits.
It's a 450core or somethign similar, but approx 600 across. Tight as, but fits.

The following images will show you.
