It could be a crook plug lead or spark plug. Have you tried swapping the plug with one on another cylinder. It could also be a blocked air corrector jet or something melted in your carby from a backfire.
Hey guys
Basiclly I am having a few problems with my 18rg in My Van (yes, a van i know)
I bought the motor in an unkown condition, but had been told it was a runner.
So got it running, and always seemed to have a miss
Then, over a little bit of time, the miss got worse.
So what I have come up with.
Basically if I floor the vehicle to full throttle, or in a heavy load situation. it gets a miss that wont clear out till the motor is tunred off and let to sit for a while. I have conluded the miss is happening in cylinder number 3, as the plug is fully sooted up everytime.
So i figure there must be a probelm with my carby??
I havnt taken them off yet, but I know they are solex.
has anyone had a problem like this before? Im guessing its maybe the accelator pump or air emulsion tubes.. Would like to rebuild them, but it would apper getting a rebuild kit for these is pretty hard from where I am from (the Being New Zealand)
Cheers guys, any suggestion on what I should do would be great
(also if you think it would matter, im not running any air cleaners or trumpets currently on the carbs could this be part of the issue)

well, I have replaced the plugs, leads and cap, so it deffilently fuel. So looks like I will be removing the carbys, which should be all good, do you know anywhere that sells Rebuild Kits international for these? Cheers
Allen,
Take the two jet cover tops off. Check if the main jet blocks are screwed down and seated correctly.
If you do not know your way around the Solex then check here and then also can recognise the type of Solex.

Feel inside the carby barrels for loose inner venturis.
Try these then report back.

Hey,
sorry for re-opening an old thread, but i have a smilar problem
i just brought another TA22 with an 18RG in it,
and when started up it will idel fine, and when driven slowley (under 1/2 throttle) but over this and it will miss realy badly, and wont clear untill it the engine has been turned off and left for an hour or two.
also, when the car is off (perhaps even when running, i dont know) but after a drive, when the car has just been switched off, fuel leaks out of the 3cyl carby intake, it will leak for around 5mins and i would get around 200-500mils of fuel leaking out of it during this time,
does anyone have any idea of what it could be?
i am thinking perhaps the float of needle and seat?
any help is appreciated
thanks
-Jake
Try the things I mention above.
If a needle and seat are stuck open then it will leak fuel out the main bowls and flood the engine on both cylinders of that carb.
If it is only leaking from one carb barrel and is running as you say then I reckon it is inner venturi. The S5 is reknowned for this however the Type T is not but both suffer from loose Jet Block Assemblies.

thanks for that Rodger,
so what would be the best thing to do to fix that? i know absolutly nothing about carby cars.
im guessing a rebuild might be on the cards? if so what is a good price for a mechanic to do it for me?
thanks
-Jake
Jake,
Before heading to the mechanic check those things first. If you have some skill with screw drivers the task is easy.
Check my site to determine what typs of Solex you have and what the parts are and look like.
Remove the Jet Cover (S5) or Starter/Jet Cover (T Type) off both carbs. Take care to note how it all comes apart and try not to damage the gaskets.
The Jet block assemblies should not be loose. If they are remove them with a large flat screw driver. Remove the Main Air Jet from the assembly and note down the sizes of Main Air and Main Jets and observe if each assembly is the same or different and note that down.
Re-assemble after blowing air and cleaning the jets out.
It is important that the Jet Block Assembly with Main (bottom) Jet and Bleed pipe go in first and get screwed down firmly then the Main Air Jet is installed.
This is where most Solexes come to have problems as the Jet Block Assembly cannot be tightened firm enough when relying on the Main Air Jet to turn the unit.
If the Venturies are found to be loose then the only way to really address thiis is to remove the Carbs to work on them on the bench. Then they can be inspected.
S5 Solexes wear their Inner Venturies, if really worn then I have parts, however they may just need a bit of care to re-seat them.
The Type T has less of an issue with Inner Venturies but can come loose if installed incorrectly previously.
Regardless take the oportunity to check both carbs and report back what you find as Seady Al needs to

cheers heaps for that,
i am alright with a screw driver, but i have never touched a carby that complex (just VERY basic lawnmower/motobike carbys)
i will probably take the carbys off as its very cramped in there with the brake booster being so close
any tips on geting the carbys off? or is it quite straight forward?
thanks again
-Jake
Yes Rodger, you are a ledgend,
It was indeed the problems with the jets, they had very nicely started to unwind them slelfs... still used a heap of gas afterwards though haha
Heavy right foot will do that
