Heres the option im looking at in my Ra28 to go behind a 1ggte. If your a purist then turn away now .

A R31 Skyline Borg Warner Diff.
They are 4 pinion, 28 spline, and which come in 3.7 (manual) or 3.89 (auto) ratios. 28 Spline should handle 150rwkw very easily.

They are standard 4x 114.3 but the threads for the nuts is a different (very minimal just run two sets of nuts for front and back).

They have single piston calipers standard and integrated caliper handbrake.

I measure from disc to disc there about 1455mm-1460mm in length.

LSD options for 28 spline: VL (turbo and V8) , VN - VS Commodores, Falcon EB(series 11)-EL, R31 Silhouette <-- which you may be lucky enough to find with a LSD already in them.

The weakest point of the diff is the LSD cones which are know to single wheel easily as well as whinning from the diff. But new LSD from falcons i have heard are around $500 mark and you could also put in Torsen for ~$1500.

The other down side is that they are a shim adjusted centre which makes them a pain in the arse to put new centres in (compared to Toyota) because you have to make up shims.

I picked one up in pretty good nick complete disc to disc with 3.7 centre for $200 so fairly well priced.

    sounds dear to me.

$200 could get you a crown diff. already disk, internal handbrake etc.

a further $700 can get you a brand spanker truetrac torsen. (cheaper then $1500)

$200-300 will get you a 4 pinion clutch type LSD. (cheaper then $400).

you should be able to find nearly any ratio for the F series as well.

no homo shimming of the centre either

your also forgetting tailshafts. RA60 (i think) rear section was the perfect length and bolted straight onto the F series MX13 diff i got. if nothing bolts in then add 400 to the budget

the borg warners are also a great option. they are quite underrated. oodles of ratios, they can be built up to handle mega hp (some 9 sec VL's still use them), heaps of aftermarket support for them, heaps of brake options for them.

if your going to get one dont ever bother with the cone type LSD's. they are pure shit. not only the skyline ones, the falcon ones, commodore ones etc etc. torsen or lockers (not spools, lockers) are the go.

cost about $200 from a wrecker complete,

What's involved it making this option work? Sound pretty good to me and the rear discs on the 1985 240 the missus drives are huge!

will need mounts transfered from your original diff ($500 from crafts diffs)

panhard rod mount need to be transfered,

tailshaft mods to suit the volvo pinion flange,

stud pattern conversion from 5x108 to 4x114 or 5x114....

and you need atleast 14" wheels to fit over the discs, i havent measured them, but they are big standars rotors (will check the spec book when i get into work)

you then get TWIN piston rear calipers, INTERNAL DRUM HANDBRAKE,

every wrecker you go to has atleast 240-740 volvo's out the back...

there a DANA 30 center, used in 4WD aplications,...i know they are used in jeep cherokee front diffs,

TRUTRACK has a center for it $950 fitted,....what i have,
    DETROIT LOCKERS also available
    AIR lockers also available.

    blake,

MK2 diff wont bolt on to any other toyota, without even taking measurements the coil spring sits on the lower trailing arm.
Other old toyota's are either leaf or on mounted on the diff casing.

Does anyone know how wide the RT142 live axle is disc to disc?
Doing a volvo job wouldn't be so good if it needed shortening.

i have a jag irs cage here you can have a look at. rest assured you wont break that being 8 3/4"! LSD 3.5 as well.

In all serious, take norbies advice - hilux diff - they're cheap as chips at swaps etc - $190 i saw one for at toowoomba! Then a mx83 lsd + gearset - say $300ish and another 300 for labor - So about 800 bucks and you have a bullet proof diff, or just buy one off somebody thats already done it
