Default When should you dyno tune?

Aftrer fitting a boost controller I'm now looking at increasing the boost.

I was wondering how far can you safely play with the boost doing a road tune and when do you need ot start thinking about only tuning on Dyno in a more controlled environment? I only have the stock ECU so it is 'only' really the boost that needs to be set with respect to A/F ratio isn't it?

I guess what I'm asking is how do people determine when to dyno tune?

    It's a good question.

Generally any time I change something that will have a serious effect on the performance and tune of the engine I'd like to get the car on the dyno to verify the setup before pushing it too hard.

In your situation if you're using the stock management and aren't playing around with fuel cut defenders I'd suggest you'll be fine. The stock management is fairly adaptable due to the use of an air flow meter and it is also quite conservatively tuned from the factory so I'd be surprised if you had many problems while staying inside the factory boost cut threshold.

Of course being a Gen2 3SGTE the boost cut is run off the factory map sensor which does nothing but run the boost guage and control boost cut. If you unplug that then you'll have no boost cut. If this is your plan then definately get the thing on the dyno to have the boost controller setup.

unless you are thinking about pushing the limits of the stock fuel map/injectors you should be fine

if you want to find the limit of it then it should really be done on the dyno with incremental changes whilst monitoring the AFR.

at the very least i would imagine the knock sensor should save your engine if you push it too far...i wouldn't want to lean on i tho!

    Cheers

would 14psi (recommended by JustenGT8) be too much? I haven't heard many JDMs running this sort of level. It is right on the Std fuel cut so I'm looking at putting the resistors into the boost sensor to raise the fuel cut to 16-17psi.

I would not run this too often as have heard the JDM headgasket can fail and the ceramic CT26 turbine wheel can 'unglue' itself over 12psi

14PSI should be fine I'd expect. If you're going to do anything to circumvent boost cut I'd be getting it onto the dyno to make sure of mixtures and check there is no pinging.
