I would say that's a long shot - busting a 4A crank needs some serious abuse.

Don't worry Ghetto I feel your pain, my AE93 is doing the same sort of thing and I've spent the last 2 months constantly trying to suss it out.

All I can say is that it may even be several things adding up. I for me I've done a lot of work to stop the noises one by one and now I'm stuck on a clonk and a grinding/vibrating noise as well that only happens when I accelerate. I can't for the life me work it out so Ill just list what I've done to fix my problems:

    - Replaced wheel hub ASSEMBLY - that is I changed the carrier bracket with the ball bearings in it for one that still had nice grease in it, as well as the hub bearings. If you can get this brand new I would recommend it. It shut up my really loud cracking noise I had.

    - I found that my left control arm nut was totally loose (like less than finger tight), this may be because I've got a modified control arm but was easily fixed with a washer. This stopped the clonking noise I got when I take off/back off throttle.

Once again, I feel your pain, damn AE92s are a right pain in the ass with this stuff. Even if you replace the whole bloody suspension assembly you still run the risk of getting one that's farked.

Default Reward Offered - Help me diagnose a Clunking/Knocking noise from Satan

Thanks for the moral support guys, im hanging in.

    - - update - -
I have some positive news on the clunk, i don't believe its engine related, it has to be something else. (flywheel_clutch / engine mount / gearbox / suspension)

Ok, im hearing and feeling a lot of mechanical drivetrain type clunks simply when the car is rolling. I can feel the clunk through pedals, and the gear shifter, and just about everything else. When i reproduce the main rattle/clunk around 5000rpm, i can sustain the clunk with the accelerator, clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch in/out does not affect clunk at all anyway (the car is simply rolling in neutral now), and if i simply apply a light brake force, the noise instantly disappears. Lifting back off the brake, the noise returns instantly. and so forth. this all occurs "without loading the engine up", so the throttle remains where it needs to be to hold revs around 5000 +- 1000rpm and the clunk dissappears and returns simply by brake on, brake off.

I'll do this experiment again, bringing the car to a complete halt.

Ive also booked an appointment with my bank tomorrow at 2pm. Im gona see if i could add $20,000 onto a home loan to buy a new car. Fuck it. Would you believe this roller is my first and only car, it used to by my mum's. Had it about 6 years.

    Cheers ppl

    Hi Guys
I have picked up a second hand wheel hub and control arm from Viso's ae94 wreck.

I'll be putting that in this weekend and report back. After that, it HAS to be engine mounts or (somehow) brakes.

i'd be checking the brakes thoroughly

when you put on light brake, you..
take out slack from the caliper so it can't wobble,
perhaps take up slack of disc (is it front or rear mounted on the hub? disc over hub type?)
won't take up slack of the CV much cos it's in neutral...
also loads up the suspension arms cos the wheel pulls backward....

with that 5000rpm.. is that exactly the same for 1st and 2nd gear? (3rd too fast to try on road?)

if you jack up the front wheel, put car in neutral, someone to put foot on brake, can you wiggle the wheel around? try to turn it etc? any noise or movement?

me is Vios , but you can call me Norman

and how did you go with that hub thingo?? u took away the headlights as well i had no time to take when i had the wreck before clint took it

if you want i can come around with my car and you can compare driveline components?

could be a anti-vibration pad missing from on top of your brake pads?

    Hey mofos

Yeh thanks Viso, I am a happy man, we stripped your car down in 1 hour flat. A best mate of mine has a SNAP-ON 18 volt electric rattle gun worth $800 at trady prices. Fuck me that thing ownes.

Basically your a champ, and so is Peter Costello. Im using your hub this weekend to see if the problem goes away.

I have a strong suspicion its the suspension (control arm & hub assembly) somehow, that can vibrate, and the vibration simply stops when i apply a braking force which is distributed from the wheel into the hub and control arms to stop them moving around.

Old corollas: im pretty sure there is not much movement in the assembly but i havn't explicitly checked. The 5000 rpm is very prominant in 1st and 2nd gear yes. But i think its largely due to the vibration harmonics, and not a knock in the engine itself.

As for the brakes, they are pristine ae101 rotors, machined to 262mm diameter, with twin piston ae101 calipers and brand new pads. The brakes were untouched when i lost the wheel and i have no reason to believe they would be causing the problem (at present).

P.S. Twin pistons are awesome, i can easily lock it up on freeway at 140 but have good enough brake feel to keep it on the brink of traction with 16" x 7" rims & rubber.

    Cheers

    hmm

a little info for you, might or might not be helpful, but i put on new wheels and tyres yesterday and lost 95% of vibration when doing light turns on the freeway, and braking.. turns out the wheels and tyres i had on them were really old and quite worn...

but yea in any case, if you still want to compare the drivetrain i'm happy to come over so you can scrutinize it as you like.. even though u've got different rotors and discs altogether..

Ok ppl i had the same thing where no matter wether clutch is in or not still makes the sound etc it turned out to be the flange for the cv where it goes into the Gear box hitting on the H beam that runs underneath the motor as the flange on the new cv's had a small bump on the edge and due to the Engine mounts being stuffed it cause it to hit but even after mounts where changed still happend i fixed it by pulling the H beam out finding exactly where it was hitting and belting it with the hammer to make a small indent so that it cant hit. Bolted the H Beam back in and hey presto no more clunking knocking sound that was heard and felt throughout the car.

Edit: My car is an AE82 Corolla but should have the same H beam style support where the lower engine mounts bolt to. If someone wants me to post a pic of what i mean let me know and i will. Thnx

Host it on a site like www.photobucket.com, then post the link, or if you want to be tricky, Photobucket give you the embedding URL so that you can put a picture in your post.

i have a very similar problem with my AE92
its not vibration as per an out of balance wheel ; to me its a hub/bearing/cv/disc rotor/caliper problem
    i'll find it eventually.

all my ball joints, (minus one which is where the clunk is coming from - can't get nut off end of driveshaft) tie rods, bushes ect have been replaced in my ae92

very interested to know other solutions...

Mate i can confirm its not a rod knock, if iwhat you are saying is true about the vibration.
Rod Knocks dont vibrate anythig, but it self only.

ive got 2 7M with rod knock.......enough said

    cheers
