Default Rattle in the instrument cluster. Hilux

the other day I pulled out my dash and instrument cluster to see what style of speedo it was as I was looking to change it over to a SR5 one. It wont fit as I have a cable driven speedo and not electronic like the guy was selling.

Anyways I have put it back in and now when I get to about 40Km/h I get this terrible rattle from the instrument cluster. Dad thinks I kinked the speedo cable, truth being though its pretty firmly in place, and did not move much when taking it off and putting it back on.

I'm thinking maybe I did the 4 screws that hold the cluster in place too tight, they were pretty loose when I undid them, maybe that has something to do with it.

Will pull it out this arvo and have a look again.

Any tips what to look for or do???

    cheers

The cable end slides into the back of the cluster as you know, possibly you havent put it back in properly or its damaged and its slipping/spinning when it spins at a certain rpm.

Doubtful that you kinked the cable, if you simply took it out and put the cluster back in.

Does the speedo jump around when it gets to 40k's when it rattles does it keep rattling above 40k's, does it jump around below 40k's?.

On another note you can convert cable to electronic, if you really want the sr5 cluster that bad.

Just had a look at it then. Pulled the cable out and the cluster forward, cable does not appear to be kinked or interferred with.

Plugged it back into place, and heard the click. Didn't do the screws up tight this time, just so they grab and will hold. Going to test drive it now.

It would rattle from 40Km onwards all the way up to 90Km was the fastest that I travelled.

The needle was always a lil bit erratic, but that was side to side, now it is totally crazy, vibrating really fast.

See what happens. Will get back to you.
