Ive seen a MX83 boiling its little BHGed heart out while the stock gauge just sat neatly in the middle.

My own MX83 was reading perfectly fine without any coolant in it when it busted the little L shaped hose at the back of the head.

There is LOTS not to trust

My stock cressy gauge sat on about halfway when the coolant hit 110-115 (indicated on aftermaket gauge) due to thermo fans not coming on. So the car needs to get rather warm before it moves above the normal 1/3 mark. 2/3 is around 120-130 degrees. Off the top of the scale is almost guaranteed BHG time

Yeah, ive hit 2/3 mark after a long climb to a lookout, left it running for about 2-3 min, but it was still hot enough to heatsoak to 120-130*

Hmm, the MX73 guage is different.
It will sit on normal for about 80-98degC.
And then by 99 it starts moving, and will be in the red by 100degC.

These numbers were from the readout from the Microtech, which is using the stock Toyota sensor.
I'm not sure how accurate that sensor is at these temps though.

Its probably the windings in the solenoid breaking down on some cars over the years.
I know Joel has had his car boiling in traffic while the gauge sat on normal.
Then again his gauge sits on normal with the sensor unplugged too.

I have to tap on my instrument cluster with my knuckles sometimes, as the needle 'sticks' in one spot. Doesn't happen that often though.

    stock guages suck.

they dont move from one position for ages, and when they do, they rocket up before you can do anything about it.

the digital ones are a teeny tiny bit better.

if your serious about keeping your motor healthy, get an aftermarket guage (even a cheapies better than stock)

Heya rob, i meant to PM you back but it slipped my mind. I havnt ordered the new one, because i cant remember the ID of the Cressida radiator hoses.

36mm is apparently too big, and i think 34mm is right. But i have been too lazy/busy to check that sofar.FALSE. The 2JZ and 7M are both 36mm

Anyone want to confirm the rad hose ID?

    The MX73/5MGE is either 32 or 33mm.

The problem with the temp gauge is the motors. Any engine with the temp sender mounted in a bolt on water outlet ( like the 7m or 1/2j -GTE Not GE , will not read correctly if the motor runs out of water as the housing cools down with no water ( or low water ) flowing through it .
When the sender is in the head generally the head will keep getting hotter if the motor runs low on water.

I have finally confirmed that the speco thermo fan switch adapter for mechanical gauges can be used with a tridon thermofan switch

    the speco part numbers are:
    P/N hose internal diameter
    547-03: 32 mm I.D.
    547-04: 34 mm I.D.
    547-05: 36 mm I.D.
    547-06: 38 mm I.D.
    547-07: 40 mm I.D.

These are noted on the speco website as to be used with "mechanical" gauges. They come with a 5/8 inch UNF thread.

now the tridon thermofan switches that have M16x1.5 thread will fit into this. they are not the same thread type but will screw in without forcing or damage. Use a bit of thread tape and check it for leaks and it will do seeing as this is the only thermofan switch adapter you can buy of this type.

just for example sake i purchased the tridon TFS-168 thermofan switch. the tridon catalogue can be found here thanks to infotechplus:
    http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...ghlight=tridon

if you are particularly paranoid u can easily get an adaptor made by pirtek or enzed.
