Hey guys, just a few quick questions with using sikaflex to 'patch up' engine mounts.
The rear engine mount in my mr2 3sgte is a little worn out. Anyhow ive been told you can "fix" them with sikaflex. For starters, which sikaflex is the one to use? Theres different types.
Also, as far as fixing them goes, do i just fill in the gaps between the rubber and the metal ring which runs around the outside. Or do i completely remove any rubber(cut it out with a knife or similar), position the steel tube in the middle, and completely fill around it.
Kind of hard to explain, but if anyones done it before have you got a guide or a few pics.

I did it before, as long as the rubber is very clean the Sikaflex will bond to it well. I went to my local windscreen repairer and asked to buy a tube of what they use, it cost about $10 and they'll know which one works best. Just tell them you wanna use it for an engine mount so it needs to be strong and for the love of zombie jesus don't let them try to sell you Mastic which is a caulking compound they also use on windscreens.

I'd go through the website. I've never really sat down to work out the differences, they all say they seal, they all say the adhere. Just to different degrees I suppose. Best advice is to not get it on your fingers or be p[repared to claim abo benefit for a few weeks

Well i can proudly speak from experience. I "repaired" my critical front engine mount on my FWD seca. People laughed at me when i asked if it was possible, but ive been using the mount for over 1yr...ppl are all too keen to pass judgement before they have tried something themselves

Sikaflex-227 (black) is preferable so it doesn't stand out too much. You can get it in white. Its about $25 tube and u need a caulking gun.
I kept what i could of the mount because the mount rubber is much harder than the sikaflex will ever be. I used a piece of plastic to hold the wet sikaflex at each side of the mount and simply filled in the gaps. Once it had set, i simply cut off the plastic pieces that were holding the sikaflex in the mount.
Note that you will need to leave it for at least 48hrs for it to set well enough to put back in the car.

The mount has a bit more give than it should but it operates fine.
use liberal amounts of wax and grease remover prior to applying the sikaflex. when pumping the sikaflex, make sure you are wearing gloves. also ensure you dont create any air bubbles. use your finger if need be to push the sikaflex down.
1 component clue take a lot time to dry if glue have lot of *deep* mine take allmost 2 week
(ta22 mounts)
2 component windscreen glue is pretty good, and dry fast , in windscreen shop they can fill your mounting with cheaper than one 1 component sikaflex tube costand its dry fast ...under 24 hour (depends at glue)
this really works in many carsand lot of cheaper than performance mountings in speedshop !!

i bought a new mount for the celica a few months back, it was only $60 and was a special order....

but when want them a little bit stiffer it will work , and maybe all mountings cant buy anymorerepairing the stock , because its broken and stock wil work , then buy a new one if possible , and its not cost like hell

From what I can see on the web, material with 70 to 80 hardness will be a good place to start.
As to the material choice.
Sikaflex does not seem to be the right material for the purpose.
It is primarily a sealant, and it’s hardness is 23-27, which is very low.

Devcon’s Flexane 94 seems to be a good product, however with claimed hardness 97, I would not use it.
The harder the better is not the case – cracks in metal may be the result.
The softer version, Flexane 80, has hardness 87, which is still a bit high.
There is an add-on flexibiliser (what a word ) which lets you to lower the hardness.

I used Sikaflex 267 - albeit more expensive, (at about $40-50 per tube) it's harder, and lasts a hell of a lot longer than 227. a bit more resistant to movement also.
that said, 227 does fine in my experience as well, just... be liberal in it's application.![]()
does anyone know of any aftermarket suppliers of 'performance' engine mounts? ie. better than stock toyota ones?
i have been contemplating for a while replacing the front and rear mounts on my 162 with some kind of urethane or similar, but am wary about making a mount too rigid resulting in massive vibrations through the car.
my FWD puts out 100kw at teh wheels, which seems to give considerable engine 'rock' even with brand new toyota mounts. surely there must be some high powered FWDs (or MR2s) getting around with more 'hardcore' mounts?
