You will have to do a Leak-down Test to find the issue.
By the sounds of things, I think you may have Warped your Cylinder Head and its possibly losing Compression into the coolant.

As of 2 days ago my VL started running really rough. Intermittantly, it will shudder violently. The spluttering happens under acceleration and at idle. Power gradually decreased over a 2 day period.
Then this morning the car would start and idle fine but died as soon as i touched the accelerator.
What would this be?
Also, i recently put some chemi-weld into the radiator and it fixed the overheating...could this be related to my above problem.
Thanks

are the injectors, fuel pump, filter etc all in decent condition?
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
Check to see if the fuel pump is running while its idling.
I know with my old 5MGE if I forgot to plug in the AFM the pump would only run while the key was in START. So she started, idled, but stalled as soon as I touched the throttle.

Cuzzo; TPS as in Throtle Position Sensor, seems strange as even over the passed two days since it started spluttering, it would still kick down rev out at WOT. Would also cruise along fine (albeit with intermitant spluttering)
Will check what you mentioned havabeer. Anyone car to explain how?
Abently; i suspected a cracked head as it was overheating badly. Since the chemiweld went in (bout 1/2 weeks ago) overheating has stopped and up until 2 days ago had been running fine.

It's quite common for VL's to shit their airflow meters and crank angle sensors. Both of these can cause the fun times you're describing. Do a diagnostics check befor you start getting carried away with anything major.
my mates vl has had many failures in the air flow meter and had similar problems as to what your describing. trying starting it with and without the afm connected and if its the same problem then its likely to be it
I agree with the air flow meter sounding like its suspect ..You need to do a diagnostic check ... but a quick not 100 % check is to disconnect the afm, you should now be able to slowly rev the engine to about 2,000 ? it then starts to hunt, main thing is to note the difference connected & not connected ... If the afm is cactus it makes a difference when its disconnected.. ie; the car runs better ...
Air flow Meter or CRank Angle Sensor... They are the 95% of most VL issues when they play up.

I used to have a VL motor some years ago. On a couple of occasions the rubber pipe going to the airflow sensor came loose and leaked air into the inlet without it being metered by the AFM . It would idle and that was about it.
Jealousy is a curse
tried unplugging the afm. car would not even idle.
the tried starting the car with the afm plugged in and unplugging it while it was idling-it died straight away.
if the afm was the problem, shouldnt the car have run better when it is unplugged?

Have you done a diagnostics check? It's easy on the VL's because they use a Nissan ecu.
Another trick is to clean the hot wire element in the airflow meter. These can get dirty and cause shit running behaviour. Use an electrical contact cleaner or carby cleaner. Just make sure it drys residue free or you'll stuff the airflow meter completely.

Try cleaning the spark plugs or replacing them. A mate of mine had a similar problem with his girlfriends Charade when it cracked the head. The coolant somehow damaged the spark plugs by putting a coating on them.
