You might be able to get away with VHT, you need a spotlessly clean surface and several light coats. It's even better if you get the metal hot before you spray the final coats - If you don't have an oxy, getting it hot on the car works. I'll leave the masking up to you to work out, I'd suggest alfoil might be the go.
Ben, i was referring to VHT engine enamel.

AFAIK the VHT stuff is rated the same temp as the other brand i saw, cant remember the name.

wasnt aware there were heaps of companies making the same thing.

my 4G54 (2.6L Astron) out of my old Scorpion, headers removed, prepared and painted up in the manner that Ben has suggested above (was a hot day also, headers were hot when final sprayed), and after just 10 minutes going for a run in the car, I pop the bonnet to find all the good work and my bright red VHT (1500*) scalded and turned a frosty white colour instead. thus why I don't trust VHT anymore.

HPC coating works OK on turbine housings, but if you get silver dont expect it to stay shiny for long! On the plus side it does stop them going horrible brown rusty looking

hrmm, well... I couldn't understand why it left some areas the original red colour (around the flanges, the Genie badge, etc.) and turned the rest white though. still got me stuffed.

If you drive your turbo car like you know you should, then the manifold, turbine and first part of the exhaust all glow a lovely red colour. Nothing that costs a few dollars and comes in a rattlecan will put up with that too well. I got my headers back from HPC the other day and they look SO much better than before - plus another set that I've been using for almost 18 months now still look all nice and shiny. Another thing is, the ceramic coating's thermal insulation claims do seem to work, from the things I've had done anyway. Having said that, some exhaust paints do survive, well a least a bit of a distance from the engine they do anyway!

cheers for the info, if someone in perth can do HPC coating, ill be sure to consider getting it done if i can afford it.

also, ive had the 1J for 7 months now, and i havent managed to get it anywhere near red-hot at any stage, and ill let other people confirm, the turbos get a hefty workout.

i also run no heat shield (i think it looks like shit) and i still havent noticed any probs without it.

Do you have an underbonnet camera to confirm this?

I've had my turbo on my stock 7M glowing after a few hours driving on the highway. Boost was always at 0 or 1/2psi.

no, but i have underbonnet looking abilities, called looking while the bonnets up.

i dont stop, open my door, leisurely stroll around to the front of the bonnet, forget i havent opened it from the cabin yet, stroll back around, pop it, then repeat

i wouldnt expect the 5 or so seconds it takes for me to get out and pop the bonnet after a hard run would be enough to lose enough temp to drop down from a red-hot temperature?

No, but slowing to a stop might be enough time, unless of course you roll to a stop slipping your clutch at 9000rpm

Ive got HPC matt black on my exhaust housing, looks like a brand new turbo.

And a Hpc silver coatin on the front cover, although youd think normal hi temp paint would be more than enough for a front cover.
