Hrmm well if it helps dispel that possibility, only the front left was burning hot afterwards, and only that wheel wouldn't spin well when it was up on stands.

Also, I pulled the caliper off and used a clamp to push the piston back into the caliper, and one of the pots on it went in quite nicely, but the other was a ****. Finally got it in and, after reseating it and applying brakes again, it very soon re-seized.

I would imagine that would mean it has to definately be that pot that is catching?

Sounds like a good place to start, but one of my calipers seized leading up to the master dying as well. Just something to keep in mind if rebuilding the caliper doesnt fix it. How dirty is the brake fluid? Even very small bits of crap are enough to pit pistons and shred seals

the pistons should be fairly firm to push back, as while your pushing it, its pumping all the fluid back through the system to the master.

that said, using proper tools, its not a bastard of a thing.

but if its too easy/too hard, you've got a problem, kinda hard to diagnose unless you've got experience replacing the pads and resetting the pistons.

    Oh, i see.
Well thanks for the input mate!
I'm going to cross my fingers it's just the caliper!!! Master cylinder going bye-bye would be an expensive job!!
I have no idea how dirty the brake fluid is yet
WIll do in a few hours when I pull the caliper off to take it to get rebuilt though.

Eldar: One of the pots I only needed the lil clamp with the wooden handle and I could do it up twisty-style with ma hand.. the other one needed the much bigger proper G-clamp, with the proper thread and a fair bit of push on the cross bolt to get it to press the pot in.
I'd say a good 4x more force required. WAY more than I thought it would need.
    Does that help?

whenever ive done it, ive just used a large, adjustable wrench, the lever type that allows you to adjust the pivot point, and ive never had to use anything more than a firm amount of force.

yours sounds like it has a problem, so yeah, a rebuild kit is on the cars, especially since we're talking about brakes, the one part of the car you dont try and save money on!

Seconded, and the tool is called a pair multigrips

I have worked on some models of car that were as a rule harder to push the pistons back than others (Discovery 2 fronts are the worst...) but both pistons should require the same amount of force... In fact you should find that when you push one piston in the other moves out. That you dont have that occuring sounds like another thing to back up your diagnosis.
