Oh and if anyone has any info on upgrading steering without going rack and pinnion if its possible that would be great too...
Cheers...
Hey guys,
Iv looked through some of the setups you guys have on here but i thought id ask if its good and where you got the gear from...
So im wanting to upgrade my RA28s suspension so i get a lower stiffer ride hight with less body roll and im not sure who makes performance springs and shocks for these old celicas? I think i want to go with low 8kg front 6kg rear springs cause mates of mine have this sort of setup in there ke70s and sprinters and there a good stiffness and handle pretty well, i know ra28s weigh more but im fine with that. Ill also be wanting short stroke shocks to match and maybe a bigger swaybar in the front and one for the back... So if anyone knows where i could buy this sort of gear from at a good price or if anyone has any info on what i should go with that would be great!
Im also after about 2 degrees neg camber cause this car will see a bit of fun on the track when im done. Any help would be great thanks guys...
Cheers, Craig...![]()

are you sure it weighs more? because apart from the engine I dont see why
most sprinter suspension parts should fit in your car so that should open doors for you. This might get a bit of criticism but I think with if you run 8kg rear springs then your rear springs might need to be around the 5.5kg mark. Also I dont know what your roads are like up there but if its anything like here then you will have traction issues with any bumps in the road.
You have Pedders in Launceston,Carline I think is a stockist for either Lovells or Kings.
Myself personally would go Pedder as they have a great range of Shocks and springs and I have used them in a range of Toyotas over the years.
Cheers Brett.
Just make sure that whatever you get from Pedders actually fits.
We've found that Pedders GSR strut inserts didn't fit without RA40 retainer nuts (extended thread section) and some rear end bushing sets (haven't tried pedders) for RA28 don't fit RA28s. We had to cut the urethane bushings down to get them into the brackets.
We used Araura (spelling?) super low (2in) springs for the front of the the RA28 and it only dropped the front end down to standard ride height (front end sat up about 2in after strut insert replacement and 18RG conversion)

I would use king springs or theres another brand id have to check what im using have had them for ages just havent got around to fitting them whiteline does swaybars and all nolathane bushes and strutbraces. Im using KYB shocks and there short stoke shocks i think im running corolla rears or something but it was quite a while ago now.
Cheers Pete
pedders GRS inserts fit in to the XT130 (hilux/pug/rona) struts, ive got them now, there ok,
suggest just doing a couilover conversion kit?
Yeah i have seen that before but i had forgot about it thanks mate!Originally Posted by MWP
I think so... Arnt ra28s like 1100kg and i thought sprinters and ke70s were about 900kg. I could be wrong though.Originally Posted by Sam_Q
Yeah it would make it easyer if sprinter stuff fits cause its pretty easy to get. Im not sure on what kg springs i should use but i do want it pretty stiff. With 8kg fronts 5.5kg rears mite be better ill try look into it some more. Thanks...
Thanks guys... Any idea how much it would cost me to go coilovers with good rear springs and shocks? Could anyone whos done it let me know what it set them back?
Cheers, Craig...
well i had kyb shocks and super low kings springs in mine and handled a hell of a lot better than standard.... if that helps at all lol

1100 eh? thats suprising, but then again that engine has way too much metal in it and the hearbox does have a cast iron casing. Sprinters are 960kg without air-con and sun-roofs on average.
I wouldnt recomend king springs because the off the shelf ones are way too soft, good quality though.
yeah mine werent off the shelf items, guy sold em too me said had em made up or something bit stiffer than usual or something, may have been lyin to me tho![]()

My 23 is running some stiff king springs over KYB's front and rear. I'm unsure of the spring specs, but they are much stiffer than stock, and it handles fantastically. I have front and rear K-mac swaybars. The front is an off the shelf, the rear I think is a later model corona item with customish brackets. 'sall good, but this setup promotes a bit of bump steer. Some RCA's should help the turn in even more and fix up the bump steer. Oh, and tyres help a lot. I'm using bridgestone G111's- 195/60/R14. The next progression for me will be some adjustable strut tops (off the shelf (...well from another country) spoontah ones should fit) and I might look into a Watt's link rear when I have some spare time and a welder with a bit of penetration. Will let you know how this goes in the future. But all in all, it's unrecognisable from a stock celica.
As far as steering goes- RacoonPeanut is the ultimate, but takes all manner of piss farting about, and basically isn't worth it unless you plan on doing an engine conversion involving a TA23 x-member. From memory, you can get some neg camber and faster steering through a combination of longer LCA's and some different steering arms. I think GH sigma and MX83 cressy rings a bell, but don't quote me on this.
Nikita the RA23 is almost finished.
